The problem with making just an acre (or 5 acres) of hay is that you will need 3, 4 or 5 pieces of equipment. It will take just as long - or longer - to prep them for use, get them out to the field, take them back, clean them off and put them away afterwards than it will to use them to do the work in the field.

Would it be cost effective to buy a cutter, tedder and baler for 2 acres or pay someone every year to do the job bearing in mind if I purchased the items to do the job I would have at least 3 to 10 acres of people asking me to bale for them

This is a bit complex Dean.
It sounds like you want to buy the kit for someone else to make your hay, and possibly spreading costs by doing some neighbours?

I don't think it's a goer.

Get someone to top it, or graze it off for you.

What would the average cost for me to pay someone to cut, turn and bale an acre of hay

About £90/acre if you had 10acres + but as said above 1 acre is more hassle than its worth unless you can charge a higher price.
