Isn’t that the very reason most of those breeds were disappearing into oblivion, until a few premium schemes came along to support them? Those premiums only make up for the lower weights though of course.
Maybe, but as cereals get dearer, doing more off grass/ forage looks more attractive. No different to the route you and I have gone with the sheep?

The cattle prices I posted earlier, were cattle out of three way x dairy cows and had spent a lot of their life grazing p pasture parkland on a large estate. So horses for courses I suppose.

True, a big continental X isn’t going to be as efficient at converting forage only rations as some other breeds perhaps. Even so, would the likes of an AA/Hereford/Shorthorn stack up as well on that system without the current premium schemes though?:scratchhead:

Depends on your resources I guess.

Again, to compare to the sheep, a native maternal line with perhaps some continental blood for a sire makes a lot of sense to me. Though of course that won't qualify for the premiums.

On the AHDB market page for both Exeter and Sedge today.

Numbers down on the week for lambs at both centres with sedge down some 30% but even so Exeter dropped 4.2pk to average 187.6 SQQ, Sedge dropped 5pk to average 183.3 SQQ
