Sedge today : 17.3.18

Well in sub artic temps and with heavy snow falling that didn't stop every ringside being packed with buyers.

Store cattle : Over 900 strong stores entered sold to a slightly easier trade according to some buyers but what was clear was that trade for Fri steers was off the clock and as strong if not stronger than previous weeks and again £ per kilo were dearer than Cont x steers.

Stirks : Again a massive entry of some 500 head with some super runs of cattle topped out at £1100 head for a 10 month old single suckled steer, another price of note were some strong R grade 10 month old Char steers selling very well at around £1025 head, in the main thou trade for small stirks would be back £50 head on the last few weeks and stronger cattle would have been back between £70/ £100 head on the last few weeks.

Store lambs : another strong entry topping out at £130 head for some superb char x ram lambs, another price of note was the first entry of suck lambs for this season around the 15 kilo mark making a very credible £41.50 head.

No idea what trade was but a massive entry of cull ewes penned.

Got 30 20-27 m fleshed fri and flecveih steers booked in for next sat look cracking cattle
They will do you well @gone up the hill

Why are you selling them so old? Unless you are FA then 27m are worth nowt.
We would normally finish them but just haven't got the space plus we have a 6 month whole herd test looming so we pre movement tested them to make sure they go before. It would only take an Ir and they would shut us down.
yes we are FA, and to be fair they are nearly fit. I might take a few to the abattoir before just to compare as jarrets are paying 3.25 for fri steers

It is very difficult to make good burgers without a blend of older leaner meat. Very young beef tends to be soft and seems to have a higher water content when you cook it.
It is even more noticeable with Lamb Burgers, they need to be made from hoggets if not mutton.

On the price of cows versus clean beef perhaps we should remind GUTH that the market is working and it is supply and demand. Similar in fact to what is happening to the finished lamb and hogget market.
It does make you wonder where the prices would be without markets!
,
They will be fit to kill and will make £1000+ easily on todays trade thou your chap who normally buys a lot of Fri steers wasn't there today.
Weather..he wanted to get home...

Because the man has patience and as my Father always said "it is cheaper than a bag"!

Down here a good heavy Friesian well finished then as long as it is under 30 months then it is fine.
And to be honest taking them up to 36 months if they have shape and a weight can still be alright if finishing on grass.

Hey up! @gone up the hill gave my cattle a mention in his sedgemoor stirk report. Those Charolais x stirks came out the fodderbeet field yesterday.

You have fame at last:ROFLMAO: you will be signing autographs next;)

Joking aside they were smart cattle, no trouble to get them to 400+ kilos dead for sure, what type of cows are they out of? @ajcc and were you expecting that trade for them? as they looked the best sold thru the ring that I saw yesterday on the trade.

Why take them to 400kg dead? Knocked back after 380 so the returns really diminish, unless they weren't fat and so out of spec that way. In which case they should have had a better ration sooner.

Hls is free grass getting paid not to farm it, they are cheaper than a topper.
But your right best on the hook by 24 months
Even cheaper if you put two batches through and left a decent beast for a finisher. Stewardship grass isn't going to fatten many cattle, they won't still be out either?

An old dealer not with us any more always told us you ought to send your cattle sooner I said sure but I want the same money, he declined so I carried on worrying about myself and not everyone else:)
There's flec steers at 20 months that are near finished so until you see the cattle it's always hard to tell.
