Best yard security barrier

Careful with the word "fob" too to ensure you get what you want. You can get "remote fobs" which act like those that lock a car from a distance - some call them remotes, zappers etc.. You can also get "proximity fobs" which only work when pressed up close to a sensor....like contactless debit cards.

I try and refer to remotes as remotes, and prox fobs as fobs.

Good point there! We definitely want remotes - proximity fobs aren't much better than a manual gate if you have to get out every time to open it

One of the best investments we ever made having an electric gate( standard 15ft wooden gate on the outside but mirrored in steel at the back ) , the gate is always shut but we have ground sensors that allow access during the day and switch off at night ,after that it will only open by remotes /keypad , the sensors can be switched off easily during the day to lock down things further and we have a very good camera( linked to the house ,office and phones) at the gate that will read a number plate night or day so we can see anyone who is asking to come in .The keypad is securely on the gate post and so anyone who wants to ask for access has to get out of the vehicle and so comes up on camera much better .The fact of having a closed gate all the time has eliminated offers for tarmacking our drive or bargain tool offers ,the gate is a long way from the house but we have a good degree of awareness and control over it .
The only thing we have had is local itinerants trying to follow a vehicle in /and or trying to block the infra red sensor on the gate that stops it from closing on a vehicle that might be across the gate .
Our gate hasn't caused delays either and has coped recently really well with up to 3-400 vehicle movements per day at peak

Hi all,

I’m looking for some suggestions on the best type of security barrier/gate for the farm yard entrance.

Grandad (85) lives in the farmhouse by himself and isn’t good on his legs nowadays. As the winter has set in he’s become more worried about unknown cars and vans driving in and out of the yard before he can get to see who they are.
There is a pair of steel gates that are shut every night but obviously not practical during the day. We’re in and out with tractors most days and regular customers come to get hay and straw, but we want to keep unknown vehicles out for security and his peace of mind.

We were thinking about a powered barrier of some sort, leaving maybe a 2ft gap one side for people to walk through in case paramedics etc need to get to the house in an emergency, but that will keep vehicles out. I’ve attached the only picture I’ve got to hand, hopefully the red lines give a rough idea of the gap to fill View attachment 743138

What’s the best sort of control? Key fobs or key pad etc?

Sorry about the essay!
Cheers
Richard
How wide is the opening? I’m just about to take out a 13ft fob activated automated drive gate complete with hinge safety edge and opening photocell beam. It will be available for sale.

The only thing we have had is local itinerants trying to follow a vehicle in /and or trying to block the infra red sensor on the gate that stops it from closing on a vehicle that might be across the gate .

I’ve had vehicles try and drive in, loop the loop and play “beat the barrier” to get out before it comes down.

Too short a close time and it causes trouble, too long and it’s also a problem.

Those sliding security gates I ve seen, how wide can they do ?
Problem I have is that my yard runs down 90 degrees off a 12 ft road and for artics they need the full 40ft entrance to get in and out. The only way I could go narrower is at least 25 ft into my yard but would still need 20ft wide gap.

Hi guys,

I want to install an automatic drive away sliding gate for my house for security reason. I'm fairly new to this, I want to know what I am about to pay. I did some research but it seems hard to find posts with a similar situation so that I can't use those as a reference.

Try Overwrought. In Notts i think? Sub 10K normally depending on spec chosen.
Overwrought Ironwork is my father, Bill Clark’s business. 01623 861033 and [email protected]

They can do from small to very wide openings (can’t remember the widest they’ve done, but bigger than the picture on the original post) and each gate is made in the workshop in Notts to order. Dad will work with the client to get the right design and fitted extras for the location and frequency of operation.

Made my own gate bought the kit and fitted my self from F H.Brundle
Not for the faint hearted tho . I struggled, but now all done it’s working well. Total cost 1k for the kit and gate £ 1.5k for ducting and elec cable and a week of my time.

Swing gate 6m I’d go up to 7 m but be stretching it wider than that . Got another entrance to do next week but it’s to far for eletric so may look at solar for that one. But that one will only be closed at night. May just try a couple of battery’s and see how long they last.
