Is it just mine, or it it earlier this year ?
Rnice looking crop
Where did you get that dog? spitting image of one I used to have, same breeder?Mowed 70 acres of a first year ley established last September, It may look terrible now but will make fantastic silage. Several silage cuts and some passes with the topper and by next year it’ll be near enough spotless like the second picture
Why on earth did you not add residual to hatra?Had some popping out into head three weeks back in October drilled wheat sadly.
It's interesting to note the various successes/failures:
1. DD'd fields (mid Oct) with no pre-em due to weather, only Hatra post em in the spring = relatively poor control. That said, a blocked nozzle shows as a line right the way up the field so population is/was high.
2. DD'd field (mid Oct) with winter pre-em and Hatra in spring - almost perfect control. Much harder to spot a plant.
3. Ploughed fields (mid Nov) with no pre-em just Hatra in spring - overall good control apart from very high pressure areas which are same as (1). A trial plot (accidental spray miss!) shows the blackgrass pressure was high so control from Hatra is impressively good. Also illustrates how much the Hatra does on BLW - not a charlock plant to be found other than in that spray miss.
Ideally aiming for no second wheats but last autumn/winter rainfall knocked that idea on the head sadly.
I know we shouldn't rely on chemical in a can to do the job....but personally I've found that pre-em f/b Hatra (pref pre-Christmas) gives a clean field that cultural control alone could not manage. All tools in the armoury are required.
If at all possible I will ensure all crops have a pre-em in future years, even if that means I'm likely to make a right mess of the tramlines spraying it. I've learnt this year that it's actually worth doing so.

Most of mine had some form of legal residual concoction in early feb followed by the hatra 6 weeks later. Don’t normally bother with the SU mixed results here but a tricky year so definitely required. Not sure it’s very legal in late March, early April!

What water rate, speed and nozzles do you apply your pre-em at/ with Andrew?Had some popping out into head three weeks back in October drilled wheat sadly.

SameLesson learned, if the choice is making a mess pre em spraying or no pre em spraying , I’ll be making a mess
