Oh I try to keep myself on a mental health even keel at all times but FFS when you feel like the entire world is against you it makes you wonder why TF we do it. Today has been a shite day half killing ourselves to get jobs done before dark and then you have to listen/read bollox about how bad farming is for the planet? Well okay then, come out of your own wee box that you shout from and show me how to do it better? Coz I am sick to death of being the bad guy ( well wummin ). I am also sick to death about hearing ignorant no nothings spout out crap on the radio about deforestation in Scotland for sheep, FFS the clearances were more about clearing people from the land than tree's or lynx or beavers and wolves. What about the bloody people? Plus this was from about 1750 to 1860 We farm hill ground that has maps that go back to the 1500's ( Timothy Pont ) and 500 years ago the landscape here was almost entirely as it is now! When climate activist put THEIR money into the land that they talk so passionately about and can teach the person that has been farming that piece of ground down through generations, ie they know how each area of ground is at each time of year given the weather etc then I may be interested in listening. Sorry for the rant, tried a new Tempranillo ( hubby calls it Tempramental ) :playful:
The clearances were just people leaving for a better life else where as people do ..

No, they were pushed out by the landlords, the LL did not want wee farms and crofts and peppercorn rents. The people were forced out including by burning the thatched roofs of the cottages so the would not come back. Think about the naming " Clearance" The price of wool was through the roof and meat was basically a by product. Check your history!

It is important for us countryside folk who produce food to keep a sense of perspective in the face of the spoutings of the ignorant.

We are producing food, as Eisenhower said to a farmer "the only reason that I am not a farmer is because you are"

Even ignoring imported food, well over 100 people in the Uk depend on each one of us who are producing food.

My family history was written by my ancestors ( all legally catalogued ). The factors served notice of rent increases, increases that the LL and factor knew could not be met, they burned them out but encouraged them to go to Glasgow to work in the docks etc, some went to America, some died a shitty end in a city they could not understand. I don't need to check my history, if you would like to know what happened to the crofters in much of rural Aberdeenshire= gies a shout!

More effective than U boats?

The time is fast approaching where the farmers who are ground down by all these rules & diktats & will simply pack it all in , leaving the hard core farmers, to stick two fingers up at Government , their short sighted policies and any half cocked environmental schemes and will just take the path of least financial resistances as in 1930's ( it may mean monumental change in farming practice) we're at the point we've had enough , big changes ahead , too right .
