Not disagreeing necessarily, but what does "over 40% have 'often' left the professional within 5 years" mean?

And with 75-80% female, a high %age will leave to have a family. Sorry if that sounds sexist, but I suspect it's fact.
Some people cant hack the putting down of animals, its not all fluffy kittens and happy people

I had a headmaster who kept bees and Mrs Danllan is starting up this year... I have a wooden camel bell :scratchhead:

I am an arable man. Was never good at keeping stock! And so it proved with bees. I struggle with locating the new queens and thus ended up with swarms. I managed to keep them going for about 7 years but unfortunately my hives died out.

I still have a few bits and pieces and only a few days ago was pondering setting up a hive in the garden and getting a pheromone lure from EH Thorne https://www.thorne.co.uk/

Fortunately my bee keeping activities were while ours and neighbours children were young - 1 - 14. Kids found them fascinating. And had great fun eating honey 'hacked' straight from the comb - although my goodness I do recall the sticky devastation around the kitchen table. But such happy faces.

Best wishes,

I was describing the difference between what vets have to do compared dentists and doctors. When you consider what they have to do it is nuts.

The rest of what you list is incomparable.

That's why so many tend to leave, a bit of a dead end job with antisocial hours and the high risk of injury coupled to modest pay. On the plus side the massive growth in pet insurance has been boon to many small and mixed animal practices and for retaining VS in recent years. But this has also bought in corporate factor, buying up many practices and often dumping large animal work altogether.

Lots of young vets jack it in. The 5-7 year itch. They are still young, well educated and able to turn their hands to something else. In common with what I have heard doctors tell me, the commitment often outweighs the financial reward.

Times gone by all the aspiring wealthy families sent their offspring to vet/medical school as it was seen as the default thing to do. Now they are all investment bankers.

we had plenty of time to implement a gradual ramp down of non essential air travel starting 1st january. First we should have stopped all residents leaving the country unless on critical business. Next we should have asked British citizens abroad to take the opportunity to return home by mid feb or risk being locked out. The airports should have been closed to incoming foreign tourists on 1st january. Those here should have been given a deadline to leave by the end of january.
It was utter madness that schools were still going to Italy for skiing trips in mid February, all passing through Milan airport almost at the epicentre of the virus in Italy. Every case in this district was initially “somebody who returned from Italy” before they spread it into the community.
I don’t think we tried hard enough. The WHO initially said there was no proof of human to human transmission and have never admitted air travel is the perfect mechanism for uncontrolled rapid spread. The WHO is an abysmal failure IMO.

So instead of taking the hit on just the tourism industry we have brought our entire economy to its knees and endangered the lives of millions.
We gave up the fight before it had even started.

You hit the nail on the head so well a click on like was no way enough.

And the vet is a long way behind the doctor on earning potential.
Staying as an employed 'standard' vet it's unlikely my daughter will ever pay off all her uni loans.

I guess that would depend upon the remuneration... (y)

Except no sane person would have reacted like that on 1/1/20, based on the available information.
The very earliest that restrictions could have reasonably been considered is 23/1/20 when the city of Wuhan was put under quarantine orders although the very fact the area was quarantined might have falsely reassured other nations that restrictions were not necessary.
You should remember that Donald Trump was roundly mocked by almost everybody when he announced that he would ban entry for most foreign nationals who had traveled to China within the last 14 days on 31/1/20.
