Born and Bred In Cornwall, But For How Much Longer ?

i found the bbc tv programme quite sad about cornwall and the divide between many of the locals, born and bred young, and the richer incommers mainly from london and the home counties, saddest point a young cornish person said that he said that there was no future for him, them in the county of his birth, no carrers , just low paid jobs, and a total lack of affordable housing for the many many young cornish born locals ? very sad ?

dosnt help to see all these lovey type TV programmes that are all the fashion, dream farm ? new life in the country ? Kate humble doing one on now, and done one on tv last year sell up in a richer part of the country, normally the southeast? then buy your dream ? lifestyle in the middle of nowhere, hard to find middle od nowhere now in the southeast so that normally means deepest wales, the wilds of scotland, including the more remote islands ? or the west country, cornwall devon, etc ? Paints a rosey picture these tv programes buy a small farm or even a field ? stock it with some rare breed pigs or even lamas, whats it about lamas? and then build a dwelling ? and live the good life ?

Yep, Suffolk Coastal is much like Chelsea On Sea and the same for North Norfolk too

And the Winners are and what about the losers who speaks for them, makes you kind of laugh if you are not so angry is that the people who are so opposed to any newbuilds or development that might be so called affordable housing, whats affordable for young locals is another matter ? are the very recent incommers that moved their for a better livestyle ?

They may seem more affordable but that doesn't take into account the average local wage. I believe my corner of Devon has one of the lowest average wages in GB if not the UK. It doesn't have the lowest house prices.

Yet it would be the people moaning about it who would rather sell their field with 10 planning plots for 2 million for second/holiday homes and not 200,000 for starter homes for local people.

well the harse reality of the property values is location location, many very ordinary, what you would have classed as working class properties, even council houses in and around london have gone up in value so much that it makes houses, land, even small farms very affordable in many rural places outside of the london effect ? and thats the big big delemmia ?

A problem of the people who buy houses in small villages is they live in it for 10% of the year and it’s empty the rest of the year, or holiday let. It changes the dynamic of the village.

People are buying houses at prices local low paid cannot afford and they have so much money to leave it empty for most of the year, it’s incredible

Most English thing I’ve seen is Rick Stein turning up in Padstow 20 years ago, having a great time and saying to himself I enjoyed my time there, I think I’ll buy the place

Yes. Cornwall has become fashionable and that has pushed up house prices whilst there also being a lack of stable year round jobs with career prospects.

It’s easy to find a winter let because nobody wants them then. Houses are worth big money in the summer.

thats true, you only sell something once, so why should you not want the highest price possible ? i personally think many laws in property buying and selling are wrong, one is breaking up a farm into lots again to get the most, best price ? another thats far to long overdue is the vender or purshaser being able to withdraw at any stage, we had this a few years back were selling a flat spent a few thousand on soliciters fees, for the buyer to pull out at the last moment ?

Sure but I'd still say that go away from the trendy area and you can still find a house.

There are 3 bed houses for £140k or less on rightmove for Cornwall. Is that unreasonable?

its like being able to buy your council house, buy it at a big market place discount, then sell it on the open market, been done round here , or in more fashionable parts of the country, london again, many many cases of council house tennats subletting them out again big money?

My son who works in London was telling me how a colleague has just sold his flat for £1.5m and moving down to Cornwall where he can work just as well, now fibre has been put in. He has paid about £500k for a large place and no longer has a mortgage to worry about.
Grossly unfair on the locals you may say, but I expect he will be spending a lot in the local economy.

saying that there are 3 bed houses for £140k or less in Cornwall is very true ? thats the same in my county essex , and no doubt the same in all the homecounties? yes houses now in my village are selling for £1, plus ? good, yes , but a few miles away again in essex you can buy houses for £140,000, or less, Jaywick on sea on the coast, been on the tv, this time for the wrong reasons ? location location location?

I dont think that is the problem as people are living and working in a community. The problem is when houses are left empty for a large part of the year as a lot of the services and employment required to service a community is not there.

Housing is a problem everywhere . There are thousands of little sites across the country where you could very easily fit in 1 or 2 little houses but the local planners across the country seem to only want big developments where they can gain big income from them from 106 monies .
It's time the planning authorities excersised a more 'cando' policy than a 'no you cant' attitude .
There have been quite a few small applications around here where the only objections have come from residents who have moved into the area ,travel to London or Birmingham to work and contribute very little to the local village life.
I'm not against having people moving into the area ,in fact I think it's a good thing, I do wish though that they would try to fit in with what goes on around them .

It is sad, in some ways, but as I've written before, everything changes and nothing lasts forever.

People around here sometimes complain about incomers from 'England', or London, or Cardiff... but people move around. There are something like a third of a million Welsh people living in London alone, that's about 10% of the Welsh population, and there is the same number again for the rest of England - that doesn't seem to bother anyone. I don't know the figures for Cornish people, but I'd be surprised if they weren't, proportionally, in the same sort of scale.

As has been written above, the problem won't be families, bringing children and money into an area, but empty houses excluding local's from the property market.

I bet nearly everyone on here has spent money on an aborted purchase or sale.
