Breedr software for cattle

I took part in a webinar on Breedr software that was promoted on TFF last week. I found it most interesting and have downloaded it onto my phone and computer.
I am still getting to grips with all the possibilities but first impressions are VERY good. I am still trying to work out what the catch is as it is FREE to use.
I have been looking for some time for an App that will record animal health treatments on my phone and this product seems to excel at that. BCMS downloading of all your cattle and ability to record weights and other treatments. Quite simply if you are looking for something to manage data on the farm from your phone in real time this might be it. I have been a Farmplan Cattle Manager user for many years and this product really highlights just how poor Farmplan are in developing and updating their product. They take the money every year for their software but do next to nothing to develop it. Cattle Manager has been crying out for a mobile app to link to the software. Other companies have left them behind, i think Breedr will become a useful tool for many farms. The linkage to desktop through the cloud is seamless in the same way GLGM works for my cropping needs.
If you haven't tried it or don't know about it i would have a look at it.
I would be interested in comments from other users and any tips they may have on using it and how to get the best from it. I love the function to scan in codes direct from medicine bottle to populate the store cupboard with vet/med products and the automatic link to the database for withdrawal periods.

Do they try and bid for your cattle ?

Noticed when I installed it, had a no active bids for livestock message.

i haven’t explored that part of the system. Selfishly I’m using it for the data management only to start with. However anything that can improve competition for stock and improve returns is to be welcomed.

I’ve been using it for about three months now, changed from sum it for the same reasons as you. It’s improving all the time as they add extra bits. They are very open to suggestions on improvements and have taken on board a few from me and soon altered things. The marketing guy has been in touch, but that side of things isn’t really up and running yet I gather. I do think they will come up against resistance from more traditional farmers as the idea is to share data and use it to predict numbers of cattle coming ready etc. to offer to processors they deal with and to match the type of cattle to the right place, to hopefully end up with better returns

What does Breedr do that Herdwatch doesn't? Currently using Herdwatch for all movement, birth, breeding, medicine and weight records. Bit pricey at approx £120/yr imo but I am tight ?
Think Herdwatch are about to launch a new upgrade so will wait and see what's changed.

If farm matters could do a similar app that would be awesome, as that would link to our breed society database ?

What does it do differently to Sum-It. I am on Sum it at the moment and use the mobile app with an EID scanner thing. Works well but does need some work.

I like you use farmplan cattle manager and every year I cough at the renewal fee even though I’m on a reduced rate and every year I say I won’t renew next year as the upgrades are never really worth the money. I’ve looked around but most seem to charge an annual fee. I registered for the webinar but was busy on silage so never got to see it. What is the catch as to why it’s free, do they get you on board then sting you because you have all the data already inputed and don’t want to lose it all?

They stressed on the webinar that all the functions will continue to be free. I think the goal is to trade your livestock. For those with breeding stock selling stores this could be a goood thing with the performance data to back up.
For me as a finisher buying dairy x calves the benefits are less obvious from the breeding side unless I create relationships with particular units.
However they also talk about trading DW cattle where the right animal and spec can be selected. For that a commission is charged.
I had some concerns about use of data but they reiterated that data belongs to farmer and they will not sell/pass it on. In that respect it is much like GLGM and any other cloud based system.
I don’t see it as a complete replacement for Cattle Manager yet ...... but it will develop and ultimately may be. What I find so disappointing is just how lazy Farmplan have been. The need and demand for a mobile app/device to integrate with Cattle Manager must have been obvious. That Breedr can offer it for free demonstrates the difference.
I have also been impressed with the feedback I have had from Breedr to questions about the software on the online chat function. They are really on the game at the moment, I think this is a product to watch ?

Yes farmplan havnt really kept up with the game, I have a psion eid reader and asked about putting software on it to link to the computer software, yes we can do that but it’s another £100 plus £130 year support on top of your existing support, I politely declined.

Paying is one thing IF they do their part and reinvest into the product. Sadly that doesn't appear to be the case. When i visited Lamma i went onto the Farmplan stand as i think they have something planned for Cattle Manager. The member of staff that i spoke too was of no help, had little interest in me and seemed to have no knowledge of the product, really disappointing. Not a good experience for someone who also runs Farmplan Business Manager for accounts.

My son has been using the Breedr app on the farm he works on since the beginning of the year, and I know he has been very impressed with it so far.

We'd love to hear your feedback as well, and if there is anything we can add to make the app more useful let us know.

Do they try and bid for your cattle ?

If your animals meet the right specifications you’ll be invited to view active trades, which offer unique deals for your cattle each week. We receive a commission if you choose to market your animals on the app. There’s no obligation to trade with Breedr though, it’s up to you.

We’ve made the app free because want to help progressive farmers drive a more efficient and productive beef industry. The free elements, including our predictive growth and analysis tools, are all geared towards helping you produce more in-spec animals.

Thanks farmer feedback is exactly what we want, you can email your feedback to our support team anytime or use the chat function to talk live.

We run a Getting Started with Breedr webinar every Thursday at 6:30pm, where you can ask questions and find out hints and tips. There’s a different focus every week, last week’s was Breeding & Genetics (video coming soon), you can register here tinyurl.com/y9spe5pm

Link to last weeks webinar is here - https://www.breedr.co/news/weigh-made-easy-webinar-faq-video/

Do they have anything to read eid tags?

We link with Tru-Test EID readers (XPR2, XRS2, SRS2) and we're looking at other manufacturers, have you got an EID reader already?

We’d also love to hear your feedback as well, and if there is anything we can add to make the app more useful let us know, we release new improvements every fortnight

Thanks I've downloaded the app. Will have a look through it all when I get a chance.

It's nice to deal with a company that appreciates feedback.

Just curious, nobody works for nothing, are you owned by ABP or some thing similar, so they have an insight to the number of cattle coming forward, slowly slowly catchy monkey type of thing, and sell through you to help close markets.

Breedr is completely independent and our investors are not linked to retailers or processors, but some are farmers themselves.

With Breedr farmers own their own data and can market their animals and achieve better prices based on up-to-date weights and medical information. This animal data is only shared at the point of sale when the farmer has committed to the sale. We make our money through a small commission (between 1-3% depending on the contract) when you commit to a trade in Breedr.

Farmers do not have to trade in Breedr to use the free tools, however those who do are achieving better prices, and helping to support the development and innovation of our free app going forward. You can read more about how we protect your data here https://www.breedr.co/faqs/
