Brexit - It's Being Killed Off

I have just listened to the May Day speech.

Yes it was good & covered a lot of ground.

She was talking to her MPs her voters & to other EU leaders as well as the presidents.

You can read into it as the EU are playing the long game in letting the clock run down hoping that policial pressure will be so great in UK that we will have another Referendum or GE or overthrow the vote of our people.

As I said yesterday IMO we should be full steam ahead with preparing for a no deal.
That would put pressure on the European leaders to pressure the Presidents to get a deal struck. With a transition period to work on the detail.

Currently EU are saying UK is letting the clock run down & UK are saying EU are letting the clock run down with Negotiations at stand still.

@Hindsight how are you reading the situation?

A free trade agreement without customs union, EU regulation and law and control of our borders. That is what I voted for and nothing has changed. Moreover if there was another referendum I would vote along exactly tithe same lines. I must say there are superficial signs that in the present climate Cameron may have made some headway with his visit but the respite would only be temporary.

How are you going to sell that to the DUP? Another few billion as a bung from the British taxpayer.

What did she say? Keep paying money to EU for stuff! Accept rulings of ECJ! Out of SM means having cake and eating it won’t really be possible!

Red lines turning pink I think!!

What option have they got? block it, have the gov brought down and then let IRA lover Corbyn in power

Also who is the DUP's money going to? That's right, Northern Irish taxpayers, so it's a rubbish statement to whinge about.

The Prime Minister has set forward the basis upon which it would be possible to move forward. The issues facing both the United Kingdom and the European Union are of fundamental importance and it is vital that we achieve outcomes that are sustainable for the future.

I welcome the Prime Minister’s clear commitment that she will not countenance any new border being created in the Irish Sea between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland goods must have unfettered access to trade into Great Britain and the same must apply to Great Britain goods entering Northern Ireland. Indeed, it is particularly welcome that one of the ‘five tests’ is strengthening the Union.

Securing a sensible outcome for everyone will require the EU27 to consider innovative solutions rather than rule out any proposal which has not been conceived in Brussels. As Michel Barnier himself has said “the solution cannot be based on a precedent.”

Last August’s United Kingdom proposals were innovative but did not receive a fair hearing in many quarters. Those proposals can ensure there is no hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland after we exit the EU.

We want to see an outcome that protects the economic and constitutional integrity of the United Kingdom but one that also enables us to have a good trading relationship with our nearest neighbours.

The Northern Ireland section of the draft legal text published by the EU, has not only been rejected as unacceptable by the Government but also the Labour Party, thus reinforcing the fact that no United Kingdom Prime Minister could accept such a concept. .

A Democratic Unionist delegation will be meeting Michel Barnier on Tuesday in Brussels. Our message will be clear. We want to see a sensible Brexit that works for everyone.

NI is a taxpayers black hole! Massive transfers from London just to keep it ticking. The DUP bung is another massive transfer from the other regions. All that on top of the DUP cash for ash bonfire!!

The bottom line is, no customs union means there has to be a physical boarder of some sort between the north and south of Ireland, it can't be any other way.

There is no advantage to a customs union whatsoever. Unilateral tariff shadowing is all that is required to avoid rules of origin and subsequent border paperwork. A customs union would be a sledgehammer to essentially miss the nut.

Tariff shadowing means we still become a distinct customs entity with our own schedules - so on paper at least we are independent. It just means no deviation from the common external tariff. We peg our own rates to the CET.

Clearly though we do at some point want to go our own way with tariffs so this would have to be a ten year interim policy. We then use the time to develop smart systems and work with international organisations to reduce ROO red tape.

All sounds fine. Where are the biggest risks posed to the above not happening. As a confirmed fence sitter, it's not the EU or anyone on the island of Ireland that will be the first to put a real spanner in the works.

Wrong. The first spanner was put in the works a century ago with the partition.

It's not just a customs union. Apparently it's a customised customs union, where the UK can be party to deals the EU is making for it's remaining members. Can't really see Brussels buying that.

they need to wise up and stop chanting this rubbish about keeping the same benefits of the SM, you cant without being in it, Corbyn doesn't want the SM because it'll encroach on state aid rules he wants to apply.

You can have what he suggest on a CU, just like Turkey have, but lets not act like it solves anything.

Brexit would be so much easier for the British if they hadn't the millstone of the six counties chained to their ankle, I find it funny to hear the unionists banging on about 80% of the trade from the 6 counties being with Britain, while Britain has to subsidise the 6 counties something like 10 billion pounds per year just to keep the basket case statelet afloat, bet the British establishment regret ever bowing down to the threat of UVF violence all those years ago when Home Rule was set to be established in Ireland, if they had all of Ireland would still have been in the UK and all the last 100 years of our fractious history need never have happened, same thing now with Brexit and the Unionists position, all they are doing is speeding up the day of Irish unity.
this whole thing is comical, the Tories being held in power by the Dup, the tail is wagging the dog!!
The six counties will have to stay in the customs union and single market with the rest of Ireland, I think Brexit is a crazy idea, but that's the up to the people on our neighbouring island.
I'm just going to sit back and watch this soap opera unfold.
