A quick update: I finally got round to doing a proper speed test by cable with virtually everything else turned off. Used three websites and got results of 8, 12 and 23 mbps. This is roughly double what I got with my a check through wi-fi.
Logged on to my BT account and they are offering me a free upgrade to fibre for free (didn't get in touch to offer it, obviously!):
We’re currently moving all of our copper customers to fibre for free, so don’t miss your chance to secure your free upgrade today.
It means a two-year contract. They are also offering two free 'discs' to improve wi-fi coverage round the house. This would be great if it was full fttp (which is definitely available) but will it just be a half-arsed effort, linking to the cabinet in the village? Not pursued it yet but we want to keep the landline and this looks like a cheap easy way to upgrade?

I am no expert, but even as low as ours is,it always works. Two kids watching YouTube separately and I can still use my phone for browsing. The thing that struggles is the laptop if anything else is being usedHave a look at this thread @hally had a similar situation. Put a 4g receiver up the hill & cabled it back to the house
4G broadband
Here are some interesting details of the availability of an alternative to slow landlines where a mobile signal may be viable, even if a group shared a small aerial above a valley of dwellings perhaps.thefarmingforum.co.uk
The free discs BT mention are effectivly a mesh system. Work really well. They will give you max 3 if you grumble about your wifi.
2 of ours are in the same building so can "see" each other so only need a power supply, 3rd is in another building on the end of 80m cat5e.
Didn`t know that. They must have them "locked" to a BT signal.they are really good but I have experience of them not being compatible with a 4g modem. Proper pain in the arris actually!
