probally because they will look after the bull , most rams get used and chucked in a scrubby paddock till next year if he lasts that long lolHad a look at judging from Sterling today. Always puzzled me why the buyers who say they don’t want a fed tup always want a fed bull. Can anybody make sense of this for me?
Our bulls are chucked out in scrubby paddocks, not much choice as all we have are scrubby paddocks, cows are in scrubby paddocks tooprobally because they will look after the bull , most rams get used and chucked in a scrubby paddock till next year if he lasts that long lol
Are a lot of cows calved in January down your way?I think traditionally the sales were timed 6mths(?) ahead of when you needed a bull ie the autumn sale you bought your bull for spring calving and the spring sale you bought your bull for autumn calving. Which gives time for the bull to acclimatise and slim off. Where as the main tup sales are in the middle of the breeding season, so many tups will be turned out on the way home from the auction.
However patterns are changing, the Feb sales now are for April serving (Jan calving) etc. so still time for a bull to acclimatise but not as much. And I'm getting more and more customers who want a bull to serve a cow as soon as he steps off the trailer!
I tried doing that today! Are a lot of cows calved in January down your way?
We do, but it's pretty rare up here.
February bull sales work in fine for March/April Calving
I buy a bull when I see one I want, regardless of if I'm looking for one or not.
I should have put that differently, I try to buy a bull...I tried doing that today!
What’s the name of your bull?Don't know why you wouldn't look after either.tups or bulls aren't cheap.
