Calf tube feeding

Morning all!! Any tips how to tube feed calf’s.i normally soften the tube prior but Iv been told not to do this.

we go straight in, but hardly do any, just finished calving our dairy, used less than x10, other than born dead, we have lost 2 calves, in 120 cows, surprisingly. All fed on acidified colostrum, no milk powder !
