Cancel your NFU membership now

Is there a discount on NFU Mutual insurance for members? I'm certain I have been told so, but I can't believe a commercial operation will want to lose our custom and I expect they will have their pencil sharpeners at the ready when the time comes.

Cancelled our DD a while ago but thought I better ring BUPA today to double check no issues as I allegedly get 20% off being an NFU member. Nice lady on the phone said no it'll make no difference to your policy. I ask if I'll have to pay more. No she says and even read the paragraph in her book stating that currently there is a policy of not raising fees if you leave the NFU. Then I ask will fees go up when the policy renews annually to account for the 20%. No she says although obviously they will increase for the normal reasons of getting older etc. Sort of sounds like there wasn't really a discount in the first place.......

There is no discount on vehicles either. Both toyota and LR quoted the same price with or without discount to us. We got the quote and then mentioned the nfu and there was no further discount available.

Ok so after the European farmers got what they wanted, shall I cancel our membership due to the NFU’s pursuit of net zero?
YES FFS!

Sorry. Don’t mean to come over so rude.
Cannot understand Why TF it isn’t TOAST already.

I’m convinced it is mostly because so many forget to cancel their DD to it.

All it takes is a phone call, or pressing a few keys on you computer or phone.

Not because they are pursuing net zero per se.
It is the fact they will not use available science to defend farmers but instead, use mutilated science to make farmers give their environmental credentials to others at huge cost to the industry they are meant to serve.

But we’ll lose our insurance discount 🤷‍♂️
NO YOU WONT!
That is what they say to everyone.

I kid you not, if they threaten to do that, tell them you will take that away too!
And it is so easy to do these days if you did.

We cancelled our NFU membership and they give us EXACTLY the same discount as when we were NFU members.

Remember that the ‘NFU Mutual insurance Society’ IS NOT the NFU.
That word ‘MUTUAL’ means it cannot be!

I assure you that they don’t want to lose your Insurance business, just because you are no longer an NFU member.

Are they even the best people to go with these days for insurance?

They (NFU) were happy to see the GFC introduced, and a large part of the GFC is based around reducing GHG emissions.

Given NFU have committed our industry to reaching net zero before government targets, I can see how NFU wanted GFC introducing as soon as possible.

They also seems happy with GFC within Red Tractor, and Red Tractor doesn't have any remuneration method incorporated within it. If we look at the core Red Tractor scheme, and take sectors like beef or lamb, there's no premium over non-assured in the live markets, so seemingly buyers who demand RT don't value it or see any need to pay extra.

If any organisation isn't doing what you'd like and doesn't represent you, then you must question membership. I'm not necessarily talking about the NFU here, but in general. If an organisation is doing the opposite to what you want, then it really is decision time.

There's various benefits to belonging to a big organisation like NFU. e.g. legal advice, advice on SFI, help with tenancy laws, etc. But then you can probably get similar service from likes of CLA.

I think there's a problem within organisations like NFU because on key issues it's almost impossible for grass roots members to vote on things. Who decided at NFU that they'd commit all farmers to net zero earlier than necessary. That costs money, and could put us at a competitive disadvantage.

If anyone wants to join a organisation which let's members vote on key issues, then for £10/annum you can join us at the British Farming Union.

We had a vote on RT's GFC, and 96% said they didn't support it at all. That's now our policy.

They have been very good on the claims we’ve had these past few years, but I must admit the insurance has gone up 25% this renewal and that’s after a review.
Ring your local mutual rep, ask if you leave NFU will your insurance premiums change. See what they say. If they say "yes", then sat you'll have to reconsider who you use for insurance provider.

We shouldn't be bullied into purchasing a second product.

You cannot want to fund an organisation who want to promote more Red Tractor dominance and force farmers into the swingeing costs of net zero without legislative obligations.

It will end up costing your business a lot more money and the only thing that will have gained is Jim Moselys bank balance and Minette Batters' halo.

This is not about being not being better stewards of the environment or not wanting to provide high quality food - its about not allowing nefarious influences to force change upon you which is to the detriment of your business.

Its more than an organisation not wanting to help you, its about an organisation actively working against you. No amount of insurance bribery is worth that

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
