Car Insurance

Afternoon have any of you got any recommendations for car insurance for our 17 year old son? He’s bought himself a cheap little car with the plan of insuring it himself to build up his no claims bonus but that’s made it worse as they would rather just have him as a named driver. Either way it’s going to be expensive, which we were expecting but just thought I’d ask if anyone has got any good contacts. Thanks

I'd never sort of worried about insurance until I gave up working, then realised I'd no personal no claims, NFU secretary managed to sort that out because I'd never had a claim with my name on it.

Black box scemes sound alright as long as he behaves himself.

My daughter was named on the wife's car until 21, she was banned form going out to town on an evening and really didn't use it more than the Mrs.

At 21 I said she needed to start her own insurance, grandma had left her a little sum so that went on a cheap car and expensive insurance.

Don't go too cheap on the car... it can raise the premium due to roadworthiness and being seen as disposable by the owner.

Try pricing for fully comp because it suggests that the owner wants to look after their car.

Add a second driver to the policy - ideally someone with a good insurance history.

Excellent tips!

My son got money off at Admiral because he drove tractors He was quoted 30% less than his 2 years older brother for similar vehicles That went down well as you can imagine

2 of my daughters both found Tesco with a black box the cheapest and the black box bonuses made them aware of how they were driving, would recommend.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread but wanting to add my 21yr old daughter to my business Landrover policy as a named driver. Full licence and has been driving on her own insurance for 4 yrs, takes the premium from just under £400 to over £700.She will only drive now and again as and when I need her to. Anyone out there in a similar position? What are others paying? Policy covers anyone over 25 to drive fully comp. but can’t really wait that long for her to drive it! Allianz through the CLA is the insurer.

As long as the young driver is named to the broker, CLA and NFU fully comp insurance papers let them drive any vehicle on the business's list, I think.

Certainly worth a word with the Broker.

I did speak to the broker, hence the prices I mentioned!
What is ‘the business list’ you mention? We have a separate insurance for the tractors, combine and machinery with the Nfu, and the landrover has its own policy

I insure our cars outside our farm insurance which is with Acres

I’ve used @Kate_PaceWard for years and can highly recommend them, they are particularly good on high performance and higher values cars and difficult to insure situations like younger drivers etc

worth getting a quote from them

Ours covers every vehicle, along with the stock trailer, hence the list. It could be things have changed, but the under 21 year old was ok to drive any with permission - although not towing the trailer, because hasn''t taken the test.

Buying the car before insurance quotes is putting the cart before the horse. We found for example that the VW Up/ Seat Mii/Skoda Citigo were significantly cheaper to insure than Citreon C1/Toyota Aygo/ Peugot 107 of similar value.

Years ago, my mate made a deal with his lad - when he passed his test, he’d buy him any car that the lad could afford to insure. Trouble started when the lad went on to sign as a pro rugby league player. Fortunately the lad was a decent type and settled for a Golf.
