Well I am no expert but we do have a 2 post ramp on farm, it's very handy.
Go for a 2 post (wheel free then). Get one with good capacity, @4tonnes would be better. If the concrete base isn't up to much get one with a "H" type base.
Ours is a base drive (chain between the towers) it's ok but if you need to remove a gearbox for clutch replacement the hump gets in the way of trolleys. It is possible to get overhead drives but these limit headroom especially for vans. We are looking to update when I get round to it..

2 poster for working on cars 4 poster for storage

the double post was £850 secondhand from a mate whose garage was closing down, double 4 posters are £2500

the 2 post will do 3000kg so can cope with a 4x4 if you want to work on farm kit you will need some very specialist stuff though

we put in a 2 post this year.its made jobs much easier and quicker having nothing in the way.it has a chain drive across the bottom but you dont realy notice it. you can get them with a chain or rope drive over the top but they need more hight.

ours works on a long threaded shaft so no need for lock out it dose have a second saftey nut ay each side .if youre buying second hand check for play in the lifting nuts they are replaceable.

Looks like Clive has washed his landrover one too many times,,It`s shrunk :DI have had a 2.5 tonne extra wide 2 post lift for 30 odd years.2 stage rams and cables from side to side under a hump across the floor. As said above,it is in the way for gearbox trollies ect. Gets my knees now though when putting the arms under the car.

My one is blue, Chinese, single phase and rated to "4 ton". 2 post, clear floor, a hydraulic ram on each side with overhead cables and mechanical automatic locks on each post. It'll lift a 4x4 van or pickup truck full of tools without any problems, it'll lift half a small truck, bus or campervan.

Don't get a 4 post unless you're planning to do a lot of drive on/drive off servicing.
Dont' get a 2 post with the thing across the floor, you'll regret it for ever.
