Cars blocking farm entrance

What's the legal situation?

Cars are constantly overhanging into farm lane they don't listen and just say they'll move if we ask them to. You can get a car through but start with anything bigger and you can't.

One got hit yesterday so want to know where we stand.

It was a visitor to the farm that touched the car.

Grey are as to who owns the lane, there are a few houses on the lane so I think everyone owns it. It's also a bridle way.

What happens if there is a fire, is it illegal to restrict access?

What would happen if you paint double yellow lines where you don't want people to park? You might be pleasantly surprised? Or at the very least, it gives you some "evidence" for the insurance photos.

how about take the largest thing you farm to entrance, park your car where trouble cars park, put some chalk scrap lines on car to make it look like scatches, take pictures, laminate them ,then put on posts at head of lane with title on it if you park where you should,nt this will be your car, you have been warned.

Best idea yet. Cheap simple and polite

Put a couple of big old bits of stone either side of the entrance. Far enough apart to allow good access for big vehicles but close enough that a car can't reasonably park inside them... or just a sign saying "don't park this side of stone"

If he doesn't 100% own the lane, if anything hit the stones he would be liable I suspect. The laws do Farm machinery absolutely no favours unfortunately

Really? Even if they aren't on the public highway? I assume it's a verge and it's probably privately owned land. Plus they are obviously static. If I drive into a parked car, I am always going to be at fault. Am I not?
Anyway, I don't suppose it would come to that. It is just an inconvenience to make the b*ggers park 100m up the road.

When the car owner comes looking for compo, shrug your shoulders and explain that it probably won't be the last badly parked car to get damaged.

But check your title deeds sharpish, and if you can find a copy of the other houses deeds at the land registry then stump up the fee so you can check them on the QT too...

It was a visitor to the farm that touched the car. Any Witnesses?

Grey are as to who owns the lane, there are a few houses on the lane so I think everyone owns it. It's also a bridle way. Can't belong to "everyone" if no one person owns it, then no one owns it, but several properties may have a right of access. Being a bridleway would indicate the Council don't own it otherwise there would be no need for it to be a Bridleway

What happens if there is a fire, is it illegal to restrict access? Yes

Don't put up a sign about parking at own risk as that will just encourage people to park there. As it's not a public toad, I'd be dropping some very big boulders (or bales) to stop cars parking in the way, cite "emergency access" if anyone moans.
