Hello all,

We have recently bought a fairly rusty but working 580G digger for light use around the farm, cleaning out ditches and putting in tracks and gate posts etc. I have noticed while using it that the transmission seems to be fairly weak in 3rd and 4th gear. This was improved by changing the oil in the power shuttle (i filled it with hydraulic oil, dont know if thats right but the manual said use the same thing as it said to use for the hydraulic system so i put what i had in!). but its still a bit weak. It doesnt really move much at all in 4th and in 3rd it doesnt like a hill... 1st seams quite powerful and 2nd isnt too bad either. Any ideas? The oil that came out looked quite grey and mirkey, probably a bit of water got in there somehow. the oil in the hydraulic circuits looks a bit like that as well... And secondly, where would be the best place to get parts? Im guessing the local case dealership?

Thanks

James

3rd and 4th are only for flat and downhill runs with older non turbo backhoes anyhow!! Does it slow down and maintain the revs on a hill or just struggle? Maintaining revs would point to slippage, just struggling could be improved with fuel filter, air filter, check tappets etc. Does it have the David Brown or Cummins engine? would guess that you should use ATF type oil in the torque converter and not hydraulic 32 type oil

it doesnt really bog the engine down, probably drops 100 or so rpm, dont know because none of the dials work! (the volt meter went through a spell of working for about 5 minutes then broke again!). I want to get the strainer out of the power shuttle at some point which will mean draining the fluid again, but it looks to have gone all mirky again in 1 day or using it, which either means its just flushing out the gunk in there or there's water geting in from somewhere (she's sat outside for the moment because we have no shed space). So i'll put some ATF in there when I do that.

I think its a david brown 219 engine, but it needs the cable for the tacho to work. If you know where i can get one of them i can get at least one dial to work

What year is it? I seem to think it had the Spicer Compact Shuttle Transmission Like fitted in the Manitous from 1987 onwards and if that is the case ATF Only - spin on filter to suit - drain all oil out and replace with ATF - check level with engine running - If it has the Spicer Box @ace is the man to speak to - as already said - if your on the flat concrete with tyres correctly blown up when new it would have started off in top slowly but now pump/box will be worn so start in 2 nd and change to 3rd/4 th on the flat with a tailwind!

why only case ATF? I think its got a filter inside the powershuttle which can be washed and put back in rather than a spin on? No idea on the year, its yellow and it digs holes is basically all i know! its not a cluchted shuttle, you just push it forwards and it goes forwards. 4 speeds.

It should have UTTO oil for the transmission, not ATF,and likewise for the hydraulics.
Will ATF work ok? Given that I have just gone out and bought some ATF for it today while getting a hydraulic line fixed... we have a drum of SUTO in the shed i would be only too happy to use instead to flush it out if that will work better? is UTTO similar to SUTO? or is it similar to hydraulic oil 32 which is what i have in there at the moment

UTTO is a higher spec than SUTO with different additives and would say both would be slightly thicker than ATF. Definitely shouldn't have hydraulic oil in the transmission. Can't see ATF doing the T/C or transmission any harm either.

Would the thicker oil maybe help it be a little bit stronger?

it has been sat outside and it has been raining, so maybe its just getting in through a cap somewhere? Will a bit of water in with it do it any harm for a bit?

Water in the oil will destroy the shuttle in time. It eats away the clutch packs.
