Cash is King or Not?

Cash. The bane of my life!

People brandishing 'readies' like they're some kind of big noise are always a PITA. Live in the now. Cash is a pest - it takes time to handle, you have to mess around counting it, it costs you to bank it. BACS is king, card is convenient.

In addition, the attitude of the cash baboons is always the same - total and utter incredulity when the intended recipient is either:
A) Unimpressed
B) Unwilling to accept it

Yes, I understand you want to get rid of your undeclared, tax-evading egg/horse hay bale/wild camping cash... but don't make it my problem.
YOU trail to town
YOU bank it
YOU pay the 1% fee
...then buy things in the regular 2021 way like everyone else does. Nobody is amazed by your pathetic wad. If it fits in your pocket, it's an unimpressive amount. 'Oooh, look at that! What are you? A hundredaire? Bless you.

And while you're at it, chuck you chequebook in the bin. Cheques are just stupid. They're slow and they're a nuisance to fill in. Worse, they now take 13 working days to clear, here, as I have to pay them in at the post office as the local HSBC closed.

They have recently informed me that they are also going for two tier authentication for some card transactions from now on. That will involve both the current PIN or biometric plus a code sent to your mobile phone, presumably to be entered into the card reader like the PIN number, only being a random number. This will probably apply to payments greater than £100 or it will be too intrusive at smaller retail outlets. Possibly for 'customer not present' phone sales, which would eliminate the possibility of crooked retailer staff re-using card details fraudulently. Maybe.
Every few online transactions pop up with additional authorisation for me at the moment - mostly authorising via banking/credit card app & contactless is popping up for a pin check a lot more than it used to - even in regular locations.

You can bet your home the government can't wait to get rid of our cash, so much easier for them to keep a track of everyone's income, it makes it easier for them to make sure they get every last penny of tax so they can simply waste more of it it as fast as possible!
Don't expect this government to step in & save banks or cash point machines whatever lies they may come out with!

We’re a little more advanced down here on the lowlands 🤣🤣🤣
Suppose time went slow for some “Dartmoor residents” 😉
ha ha

joking aside, I never wear a watch.
My record for not smashing one up on my wrist is less than a week.

Much to @smcapstick 's dismay, i happily take and write cheques, and we handle a lot of folding stuff too.
I deal with a lot of, er 'tradesmen' who like hard wedge.
Obviously, the difference between legitimate cash and the other sort needs to be kept in mind.
I had one fella try to pay for a £10k oak frame in hot cash..................how he was going hide a whole house i don't know.

If cash does go - and clearly there are plenty who want it gone- I suspect a trade -of the illegitimate type- will arise in folding USD/euros , or even gold once more.
I wouldn't want to get involved, but could easily see it happening.

Oh, I believe I have a bit of plastic somewhere, but don't really know how it works.

I don't often go shopping but today I wanted a new pair of sun glasses now that summer has arrived.
The last basic ones I bought from Boots so I thought I would go back and find another £30 pair.

Got to the till and handed over £30.00 cash and was told they only accepted card payments! Now I could have paid by card but I stood my ground and I said I wanted to pay cash and as it was the correct amount and I didn't require any change surely they could take it as it is "Legal Tender".

After a call to the Manager they accepted it!!!
A lot of old people and those on lower income, especially in rural areas still use cash. Is this the slippery slope to do away with it?
Don't use cash and haven't done for years. All business payments done on line, they have to be as cheques are no longer accepted by the banks.

It's not as straightforward as that - the shop haven't provided the goods in a legal sense until agreement to sell is completed, which is generally assumed to be completion of the financial transaction. Removing the the tag could be treated as criminal damage because you have wilfully devalued an item that you do not have ownership of or permission to detag.
I never use contactless and always put the card in the machine and then put the pin in. So when my card was done in my pocket the bank rang me up and told me as was a rare occurrence. I probably wouldn’t even of known as I rarely look at the statement.
