Cash is King or Not?

They have recently informed me that they are also going for two tier authentication for some card transactions from now on. That will involve both the current PIN or biometric plus a code sent to your mobile phone, presumably to be entered into the card reader like the PIN number, only being a random number. This will probably apply to payments greater than £100 or it will be too intrusive at smaller retail outlets. Possibly for 'customer not present' phone sales, which would eliminate the possibility of crooked retailer staff re-using card details fraudulently. Maybe.
They do that here for online transactions, number texted to your phone and a high security number , different to the pin, known only to you.

Cash is king. I've lost my card in the past and having cash at home has saved the day in being able to buy things.
Online banking is fine when everything works but when Internet goes down or whatever that's when the wkeel falls of the bus or your account is locked.
I use cheques on a regular bases and will stick to doing so. Old fashioned maybe but it works.

I don't often go shopping but today I wanted a new pair of sun glasses now that summer has arrived.
The last basic ones I bought from Boots so I thought I would go back and find another £30 pair.

Got to the till and handed over £30.00 cash and was told they only accepted card payments! Now I could have paid by card but I stood my ground and I said I wanted to pay cash and as it was the correct amount and I didn't require any change surely they could take it as it is "Legal Tender".

After a call to the Manager they accepted it!!!
A lot of old people and those on lower income, especially in rural areas still use cash. Is this the slippery slope to do away with it?
Stopped on the way home from work last week to buy a can of Irn Bru in a local petrol station. Got a mild ticking off for paying by card as they normally have a £2.50 minimum spend on card transactions!

Cash worked fine for thousands of years. Probably make a comeback when t'internet crashes. Which it will one day.
So that is why the Templar Knights came up with a way to not have to carry cash in the 11th century, because it worked so fine.

Sounds like they are laundering money. Same as popup carwashes, they are usually fronts for gangs cleaning up dodgy cash.
You will probably find they object to the commission charges on card transactions, both the local kebab shop and chinese takeaway are cash only for this reason, they usuallly pay all there suppliers in cash on delivery too.

Authentication codes are a PITA. Trying to buy something online for only a few pounds, I was sent an email saying they had sent a code to my phone. As we get one bar reception on a good day, my phone is usually turned off, so find phone, turn on and after a couple of minutes a text message appears with the code which I enter, only to be told the code is not valid as it has expired. Ten minutes later another email with another code, enter this, but mistake a 6 for an 8, which I correct only to have a timeout cancel the transaction. Third attempt, hanging phone out the door to get a signal I get my order in. We get our shopping online with Tesco. OH has a new Tesco credit card so payment shouldn't be any bother, only if we suddenly remember we need a jar of mustard adding to the list, we have to wait for an authentication number phoned through to add a £2 jar to a list which already has a £100 of goods on it and which has been accepted without question.

Still have a UK bank account which is difficult to use on line, authentication codes sent to an overseas mobile from a UK bank do not work. Global Britain ??????

I personally like cash. I do seeding and other jobs for a friend and he like to dispose of cash as he come by large amount of it and isn’t fond of the tax man. I use it for un traceable things like kids going to movies and spending money while on holiday. Buying items from local online sites only want cash. I tried paying for all my farm inputs with a card fir the points that were linked to using it. Was told a 3 percentage surcharge would be applied. Out with the cheque book as that wasn’t going to happen. Cards are convenient for buying parts over the phone and reducing change handed back but until you see the cash leaving your hand the cost doesn’t seem the same. Easy to spend with a card but cash runs out and brings reality back.

I very rarely use cash but I don't really think its a good thing to have all our spending recorded.
Have some cash at home just in case but the problem is if the power or internet goes down people just close the shop until they're back online.
