Mrs BnG and I just had a walk up haytor, lots of cattle mostly belties but some straight black ones.
Just being nosey is it worth it, how long do they stay out , do they calve out there etc?
Assume it's common rights? Haven't seen any sheep yet.
Thanks

I had to stop to let a black bullock cross the road the other evening near Wotter (that way through from Plympton to Yelverton). He looked like a Welsh Black. Had horns.

Those would be my belties…. Go up when they finish bulling (Angus bull) in July and stay up till next week.
It works well for us, It’s a good place to loose your cows for the summer
Do they heft like sheep? Looked to stay in their own groups. Do you gather all of them together or do you each gather your own

Yea they leer fairly well near our new take.
depends what I find when I get there, usually they tend to separate out as you start walking them back
For anybody reading Scooby, a newtake is an (stone walled up there ) enclosure and inside is it all yours to use and no one else?

Thanks for the explanation.
Back home now, fair play to @Scooby and everyone else farming up there it's hard country. Ok for a break for some space and blow the cobwebs away but must be hell when the weather is bad. Us tourists are probably a pain as well

There is a lost back calf on Dartmoor near Haytor. I brought him back to the other cattle but I feel like he's lost his mum. He's very weak and hungry. I'm not sure how long he will last.
