Steel posts and gluelam beams, I can't imagine them being cheaper than steel, but they look lovely.

It was a cubicle shed with auto scrapers. The middle posts weren't part of the frame in the original shed design the farmer told us, they were the posts to support the feed barrier and the double row of cubicles. They used the truss to support the post as opposed to the the other way round.

Not too sure, from what I've seen they mostly work with a deep bedded cubicle with a sloping heel kerb to stop the bedding from spilling onto the scraper passage.

They have most of the roofs pretty steep for that reason too. Shallow roof angle and clusters of buildings are the main reason why so many sheds come down here in winters of heavy snow.

Like in Aberdeenshire in January five or six years back. An incredible snowfall led to an awful lot of sheds collapsing around the Huntly area for example. Was talking to a mate of mine from the area on the phone at that time , and he could think of roughly 15 farms or thereabouts that had lost sheds to the snow.

Roofs too flat. Too much weight of snow. Crash.

Bloody dangerous too. Some folk were apparently in the sheds trying to move stock out to safety.

Here too, we aren't far off the sea and rarely get much snow cover, plenty falls at times but it doesn't settle and even we had nearly 3 ft at one point. I can think of 3 farmers who between them had 12 sheds down, and they weren't all old sheds either, quite a few Portal Frames.

A shed was built not far from here with a 90ft clear span with ridge vents. It's quite stuffy in there and the steel is silly sizes. Something like 18x10 with 18" shuttered walls. Central feed passage with steel 4x4" posts concreted in. Fooking mad if you ask me.

Yeah he then built a sheep shed next to it same spec.

Don't know about the wood boilers. Are we thinking about the same farm? Haven't done anything about a shed here. Hoping to apply for a grant and build next summer maybe, Barclays permitting

Rather than hijack the other thread I thought I'd start another. I need to build a shed to house about 25 spring calvers and their calves on an off lying farm. Ideally as cheap as possible and adaptable.

Was thinking 75x 40 feet barrier down one side 20' scraper passage and 20' bedded area??? Probably fed in ring feeders behind barrier initially so that we don't need to go down there every day. (Tenant in house could keep an eye). Would probably have small,lean to at the back for straw storage.

Any better suggestions?

Would not store straw, hay, etc anywhere near the animals.
What you going to do in the event of a fire?

Site cleared for shed and hoping to apply for the new sustainable investment scheme or whatever it's called. Apparently they're relaxing the rules a bit re carbon emissions etc due to low uptake. Only 1.6% of welsh farms have sent in an expression of interest. As the rules stood we'd have had to do a lot of improvements at home to get a grant for a shed at the other place!
