Claas 96 dominator combine starter removal ...

I am brand new to this forum. I am asking a question for a friend who is an experienced mechanic but has been asked to work on a CLAAS 96 Dominator combine harvester for the first time. He is asking to find out the procedure for accessing the engine compartment so he can remove the starter. Any help is appreciated. We live in central Alberta, Canada. Thanks ....

Hi Glasshouse .... nope, no harvesting here till September or October. We haven't even seeded yet. Our tractor club purchased this combine off a local guy and we are starting from scratch on it. We do not have a shop manual yet but are looking. One of our members is in the process of getting it started, it's been shedded for ten years. Sounds like you know the model relatively well, is that right? Where do you live (not sure where Lothians is). I'm sure there are a hundred questions you might be able to help us with. I have operated and owned six dominators over last forty years
Still got a mega 208 in its 26th yr

To access the side of the engine you either tilt the cab forward or take out the grain tank panel.

The engine bay is accessed by lifting the lids on both or either side of the bay, the sloping part and the flat part are hinged and fold up quite neat to give quite easy access, its self explanatory once you are there.
The rotating screen can be hinged up after removing the belt to allow access to the radiator for cleaning, there is a built in prop to hold it.
Our Dom 96 has the Merc 6cylinder turbo engine, some had a Perkins but I have no experience of them
On the Merc the starter is on the left side of the engine(front of the combine) just behind the cab. It is under the exhaust and turbo. It is possible to take it off without removing any panels if you lie onto of the engine and reach down past the exhaust. Needs to be cold obviously. Not saying it is easy but it's do-able.
Are you sure its the starter that's wrong? Seen more than one with a dodgy key switch, my own included.
Claas website has all the parts diagrams which although they don't give the part number are very useful for showing how a particular assembly is put together.
I think I am pretty familiar with most of ours now after many years, and know all the usual sore points very well.
They are a good old machine, not much electrics to go wrong, and plenty of parts in breaker yards (we'll in UK at least)
