To be fair, the south west is a big net demander of feed grain. In the east, it's the other way around & many of your trucks head west. There's usually at least a £5 difference for the extra haulage.

Have to say I bought some futures today to cover some exposure I have (although good exposure at the moment) and some call options.

Just hope the rain reappears on my rain chart

What's causing todays spike in prices?

May futures get technical?
However, old crop May-19 UK futures have bucked the trend this week, in what has been a price spike unseen in other global markets.

By 11:30 today, UK feed wheat futures (May-19) has gained £6.70/t from Tuesday’s close, potentially due to a technical squeeze with short positions likely attempting to get out of their positions.

With buyers bidding £165.25/t and sellers asking £168.00/t, the spread shows the disparity between those involved in the market.

Additionally, this has been a week of very thin trading. The total volume of trades carried out on UK futures yesterday was the third smallest volume recorded this year. At just 74, this is just 8% of the number of trades carried out on Monday.

Amid very thin trading on UK wheat futures as shorts are likely exiting their positions, we have to question once more what UK feed wheat futures represent. With a limited volume of trades and reduced liquidity, how representative are futures prices of physical markets?

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
