Prices I have been quoted this week, spot.
Rape meal £227
Wheat distillers £244
Maize distillers £212
29t loads delivered midlands

Rapemeal best value on those prices per unit protein. Maize distillers best on an energy basis but much lower protein

First quote in:

21% ewe nuts £281
18% £261
Poorer quality 18% £251

Based on a 10Ton bulk load.

Do you reckon if I fed the 21% I could get away without feeding any high energy blocks pre-lambing? They seem a very expensive way of feeding sheep.

Just grass and fodder feet in the field post lambing? Start lambing 15th March, lowland southern England. This is assuming the grass actually grows this year and I don’t have lying snow on my lambing fields from 25th feb until the 1st of April.

Are those GLW prices per chance:whistle:

The 21% protein cakes are designed for straw or poor “hls type” hay feeding systems. With plenty of grass based forage (hay/haulage if grass tight) 18% protein is sufficient. Important thing is energy. Needs to be 12.8 ME minimum and ideally 13. At 13 you don’t need to use any energy buckets at £900+\- a tonne:)

Have you bought barley off them?
No we get micronised soya in bags @ £11.57/25kg, complete lamb pellets @ £7.70/25kg and an 18% 253 flakey golden blend coarse @ £8.52/25kg and we mix with home rye and barley for the fat lambs. These are collected prices.
Ewes will get 18% pencils from I’ansons but we collect them in bulk.

Is it worth the extra £130/T?

Well like for like in bags about £100. Depends on what you’re feeding with it. Much higher in oil and energy. I wouldn’t use it instead of hipro, but replace a small portion of it maybe. If you replaced one bag to the tonne of hipro with it in your calf creep you’d see a difference for not much cost per tonne.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
