Contractor dumps 40ft header

Horses for courses, but for a contractor it could make sense. As a contractor you can never be in the right place at the right time as far as your customers are concerned if you are not with them, so yes you can keep two customers happy. Also they are working on all shapes and sizes of farm, but most large farms will have their own combine, so it will be the smaller guys using contractors, whose fields and grain handling set ups with 8 or 10 inch grain augers don’t suit a big 80 t/hr machine!
Those farms running a 40ft machine will have the field size and grain handling to match, so will be far more efficient.

The Kiwis or Aussies, or any other lad/lass coming from abroad is likely to be brighter than the average. The dull ones stay at home.
I was reading just this point in a local history book from 1890, written by our town vicar. He was bemoaning the state of agriculture in the district and blamed it on the fact that all the brightest and best lads had gone overseas to work around the Empire, leaving the lethargic ones behind on their family farms.

There are other downsides to wide combines. We’ve baled a lot of straw this year behind all colours of combine, purely because the chopper wouldn’t spread 40ft of straw back over 40ft.

If you have one wide combine and it breaks down for a couple of days you don’t get anything done.

I also put less over the back with a narrow header as I can travel at what feels like a "reasonable" forward speed without overloading the walkers. I got impatient with snails pace of the wide header, and also tended to overheat the engine.

My baler doesn't need upgrading now and the chaff and chopped straw is more evenly distributed.

I like downsizing.

Kind of wish my contracting partners went for the same option... ;)

Here’s my stupid question

Can’t you just go faster in a good crop with a smaller header anyway?
A bigger header doesn’t change how much crop the combine can handle

Yes slightly but combine is normally suitably sized to the header. Wonder what speed you’d have to travel at to keep the biggest models full with a 15ft cut?

Also smaller table = more turns = more wasted time.

Having used 14/16/20/22/24/25/30/35 ft headers on field sizes from 1-200acre I’ve got to say 25-30 is the easiest to use when cutting/corners etc..

About the article in farmers guardian, from what I understood from the article the farm in question has a 770 on 35ft and 2 smaller machines (I think Tucano 480’s) on 25ft. The reason being that he had a 780 and it performed worse than the 770 so they then decided to change in the 780 for 2 smaller machines and it has improved throughput over the 1 machine. They still have a 770 though so if they really thought smaller was better they’d have 4x 25ft’s and ditch the 770. I bet there was a good deal done to get the new tucano 480’s on farm. There’s also quite a variety of crops to harvest and in a lot of locations so 3 suited better than 2...

You never know this same farm next year might just run the 770 on 10.5m and a 8900 on a 13.8m and they’ll say it’s the best thing since slice bread as they’ve managed to drop a harvesting team and increased output?

@Brisel @ajd132 the same negative ones are probably in the anti over 24m crew :scratchhead:

I know people who have bought combines with the smaller header available, say a 24ft was standard and they bought a 20ft, they have always regretted it, not being able to go fast enough without cooking the hydro’s and stubble heights all over the place when you go above 6kph. Like @Andrew said to about more turns and more wasted time etc...

Farm in question runs a tidy outfit,I get my straw next door and always seems a well run unit

I haven't seen the article, but putting 2 and 2 together to make 5 :ROFLMAO: , is this referring to BR? If so i am pretty sure the two new machines he is running are Tucano 580's and not 480's as @Al R suggested

Sorry the last time I looked on claas website they only had the 480 and no 580, same size machine probably though but more about getting the point across as opposed to exact model numbers
