One of the great mysteries is the mind of the farmer. What other employment opportunities are available in NZ? Would I be right in thinking that there would be much better chance of getting a job outside farming over here? Just wondering why farmers would carry on struggling on half of bigger all if they can get a reasonably well paid job, probably with more time off than they're used to. Why would they restrict thselves to a living substantially below most of the population?
They must have changed a hell of a lot since when John Cherrington used to visit then.He said they were hopeless businessmen, all their buying and selling done through agents. From what I've seen out here that may well be partly true - although I've met a fair few pessimistic chaps, it's not all endless sunshine and happy days.
Regulation is certainly lighter out here, but it's not the "Wild West" that some would have you believe.
I think we get suckerd into a bit of kiwi worshiping in the UK partly because of a shared language and history. It has to be said that they are also very good self promotors. I think they biggest difference is prehaps as an average they are slightly sharper businessmen - out of nesssisty there is no safety net or much of home market to rely on.

Uisng an agent makes you better businessman imo, the best recognise there own talents and own misgivings and employ to suit.Perhaps - they certainly don't bugger about with sentimentality, if its docent pay or make economic sense its not going to happen. I also think that the use of an agent doesn't prevent one from being a good businessman.
Dunno....it was the highlight of the program for me..Ellie Harrison and those trousers just about says it all!
He's there and he's on the TV. I don't have the face or necessarily the ability to get there. He's working hard for his family's interests and probably gets massively frustrated with the Beeb and their politics, protocols and working practices.Must have been new for him
