Not saying no management but I don't do fussing. I feed them they give me milk end of

Bad management especially during transition time. Too rapid change of diet. Blooming twins! We find giving big tubbly bucket of special milky drink for just calved cows works very well together with big armful sweet dry silage. Has to be done asap after calving and before she gets to any water. They absolutely love it and will lick bucket dry until it shines! We also find that they will not leave the calf to access water and /or feed at the feed barrier so could go far too long with empty stomach after calving if we didnt do this routine. As for toggles. Only tried it once and didnt work for us as toggle pulled back into body and got infected. We are lucky with excellent vet who is ace with DA op if needed. We never delay in checking fresh cow out if milk yield not what it should be, has cold ears or sucken eyes.

I think something funky had gone through the trough in my case, they were in the same group and 100ish DIM so hardly transition cows.
I do think that larger cows are more prone, having more room for things to swing around inside possibly.

Agree with that which is why we are so careful with getting feed and drink into them asap after calving. Also, our deeper bodied cows are more prone than others. Also agree that the problem, although more common in transition cows, not confined to them. In our experience, the cause is usually traced back to some feed issue, which caused a change in their feed intakes, be it sickness, lamness or something wrong with the diet. We too have had the odd case of over 100dim and had one heavily pregnant case which was operated on successfully. We find one of the biggest problems is in some inexperienced vets finding a difficult one. Although we know the cow and are pretty convinced that it is a DA.. ..usually milk drop and the all important cold ears, with puffy eyes if we've been a bit slow in spotting it .... its sometimes far from easy finding it and needs more than one visit and your herd knowledge to keep looking for the reason she's sick before it becomes too late.

to follow form glow worms post on calving we used to get a lot by having over fat cows last season we had none last season. glowworm mention straight after calving and feed intakes,i couldn't agree more we have feeders back and front of the calving pen and even then if we have more than 10 calve in a morning we will carry excellent quality baled silage to other areas of the calving pen to ensure that the shyer cows get every opportunity to feed with worrying about being bullied or leaving their calf for too long. Any hard calvings(anything with the use of the aid or exhaustion) we give a shot of metacam to fortunately these are few and far between and finally we now feed magflakes through the wagon.which has reduced our MF to under 1% last year. though we are not scared to calcium bolus any calved cow that I am unhappy with.did about 20 last season.
Calcium bolus? I cant at the moment remember the name, but did you ever try the huge calcium bolus that you give specifically to at risk dry cows? Need special very large bolus gun. Persuaded by vet to try one on cow carrying twins. Eventually found remains of bolus in cubicles sometime after calving. HORRIFIED!! ( it was found in bits) to find it had contained 2'' rusty spring with very sharp points both ends. We don't use magnet boluses but fancy deliberately putting something like that into a cow?!
Feel her ears! Chewing cud, feeding and normal temperature .. have seen all with a DA .. but its the freezing ears and sunken eyes that for us anyway that sets the alarm bells ringing

Cold ears is often low calcium.
Get a stethoscope, it's fairly easy to hear the ping if they have twisted stomach

Are you positive the spring was in the bolus?
Only asking as ive tried a few this year and although I haven't gone through the data yet i think I used less bottles.
Anyway, before I started with them I smashed one up to see what was in it. I didn't find a spring.

all three RDA in five day period , one pregnant , one had a heat three days previous , the other was a bit lame
nothing else, either feed or circumstances had changed
