hi I was wondering if anybody on here has sown spring beans into a burnt off grass ley with a vaderstad rapid ?
My agronomist recommends DD I have three options one neighbour has a rapid the other has a Mzuri or I can min till it and use my khun venta disc drill
Thanks

The Vaderstad will struggle to get them in deep enough & you risk hair-pinning grass residues under the seed that will slow its development. You can min till it but it seems a shame to break up what may well be a good surface soil structure. What is the structure like? Any compaction layers you need to remove? I'd strip till drill it but that's what I do with everything here anyway.

You won't be able to DD into a grass ley with a rapid. Don't bother trying. The Mzuri would be the one I would use out of them but as others have said would try to find someone with a claydon.

Sorry to jump in on this thread but i'm growing some beans for first time this year. I have a rapid, a carrier and a trio.

Fields beans are going into were rape established trio then drilled. Then wheat carrier then drilled then s/barley trio then drill (chicken muck and lime wheelings needed removing). Then had vetch and phaceila cover crop direct drilled by rapid. Grazed this with sheep then been sprayed off.

Was thinking carrier but a bit deeper than normal say 4 inches then drill 24hrs after when its hazed over a bit?

Have you past use of a Mzuri drill that informs your witty epithet? Would be interested to hear of your experiences.

Yeah have a bit of experience with one. They just weren't right for our situation. We are on clay soils and late drilling due to blackgrass. Strip till drills arent great in a blackgrass situation in my opinion as they disturb the soil a lot for the first time when your drilling and chit a huge amount of blackgrass. I'm sure they work well in other situations though.

Yep. Here's what @Feldspar 's Claydon strip till drill does with a high blackgrass infestation in osr.

Fair enough, shame it didn't work out for you. True that drilling late on wet clay isn't pretty, although the natural crumb on our clay is improving each year so might become marginally easier in time.

Not having any experience with the evil weed yet, would a gramincide with astro kerb stacked have a strong effect on it or is that a losing battle ?
