Digestate containing food waste

Have been using liquid and fibre digestate this year and very pleased with it.

One of the ad plants is about to start using food waste. This is a council owned and run plant. Ticking some boxes no doubt. Would you be happy taking digestate from a plant running on waste food. Or are you doing this already?

The digestate is going to be fully tested to make sure it doesn't contain any nasties but I'm slightly uneasy about taking it now food waste going into it. When grass silage, rye and draff going in I was fine with it. Just what we are feeding cows.

Prices of fertiliser make Ad waste a attractive option.

Plastic is biggest issue with food waste. I have 2 digesters near me and have had waste from one and there’s no visible sign of plastic. It is looked for on the test results I’ve had. I’ve walked fields having had digestate from another digester and the plastic is noticeable.

Get it tested yourself the piece of paper they show you could be a test for anywhere 🙄 AD plant round here on food waste says it’s got no plastic in it but every lagoon I go too that they’ve filled has plenty of micro plastics up the side walls of the lagoon when it’s emptied 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’ve always wondered about the plastic element. We’ve got a national contractor who collects our food waste from the shops every week. They say chuck the packaging and all in the wheelie bin. As there’s often glass aswell they must do some kind of screen but I wouldn’t imagine they would stomach the landfill cost of the packaging if they were sorting it before it goes in. I see down in south Devon the council advertise you can put your food waste out for collection with a plastic carrier bag now

Used liquid food digestate for a few years and theres no plastic in it as it wouldn't get through the dribble bars. It absolutely stinks though so be aware of putting it on a growing crops as you can't cultivate it in obviously. We had a few complaints. I don't think its as potent as they make out though.

if there’s food waste used there will be plastic in it screened so very small bits and you will be told it’s biodegradable and passes the percentage for allowed amounts
I think there could be repercussions when the greens find out
