Direct drilling cereals into a Westawold burnt off grass stubble?

It’s possible and works very well with bg control but it’s not easy and you generally get a backward crop going into winter that in April motors on I put this down to 2 years and 6 cuts of silage in our case

Would a spring cereal work better do you think?

What drill are you using? A disc drill into a grass ley in the spring will make a nice job on the day of drilling but in my experience the soil will dry and shrink causing slots to open. That said I’m going to try it again this spring but will destruct grass in jan and let the surface dry so it crumbles.

It would be a Simtech aitchison drill.

So if you destruct the grass in January there would be less risk of the ground drying out for a Mar/Apr sowing of a spring cereal? Compared to taking an early silage cut in April say, and then putting it immediately into spring cereal?

I’ve no experience with a simtech but guess it would be better in that scenario being a tine. I’m destructing in January to create a gap for frit fly and to enable surface to dry pre drilling as opposed to drilling into nice damp live grass roots that will bind the soil together then it shrinking after

I’ve done it/do it with a Simtech. More so with 2 yr Leys though. Where it works best in my experience is drilling into fym. This is drilling wheat. If the grounds hard, tighten all the bolts on your drill!!

Have done it for 7 years but in the autumn not had a problem so far, this time we have got a bit of volunteer trouble but hopefully have got that sorted, cant see doing it in the spring would be an issue with the simtech which is what we have

I have been using a Simtech to drill winter wheat into two year herbage seed stubbles for the last three years. I normally apply 20-25m3/ha pig slurry or 15t/ha pig FYM pre spraying off. The crops never look great, sometimes for most of the year but when the combine goes in there seems very little yield difference compared with ploughed, power harrowed, some third cultivation and then Moore drilled crops.

Thank you for all the replies.

If you had the choice between the 16 or 20 row Simtech which would you advise?

For drilling grass seed, would it be possible to get away with the 16 row and then just double/cross drill it?
