cheers for the pics, what i meant by zoom was wondering what zoom level to set an ordinary cam to do a quick test of how far away a sheep could be picked out.

looks like a round trip of 5 miles would be safe with a full battery.

We have a tidal boundary to the farm, sometimes interesting things get washed up during stormy weather. Would be good to be able to have a quick flight round and see whats about sometimes.
Also to be able to see which field the geese or deer are grazing

With the app you can program a route for it to fly so just take it outside and set it off, it'll do its route and come back.

Just in cases anyone is in sure 400ft is 121m
So I wouldn’t post that you have been breaking the law as the CAA (civil aviation authorities) have the authority to confiscate equipment and press charges!
Also it could be made law that from 2018 you have to have to sit a test and have a license to own/fly a drone over 250grams in the uk.
I love the hobby but unfortunately it will be the few that spoil it for the many!

Just so people are aware it’s illegal to fly above 400ft and must be kept within the line of site at all times, so 2.5 km may be pushing it. See the bmfa web site for more info they will also offer 3rd party insurance for a little ove £30 a year which covers into the millions if you hit/kill someone (it has happened).
It’s a great hobby to get into, I have a couple of smaller drones (no camera) but mainly fly heli’s

The heli’s Seem dear compared to the drones got nearly 3k in just one! Got a dji on my shopping list for this year though.

I presume all your helis are electric and I know the electric side of things can get rather expensive. Hot brushless motors, decent lipos and speed controllers. Even the airframes ain't cheap. The last all carbon glider I purchased was £600 alone. The additional running gear, servos and reciever, plus bits and bobs were almost another 600.

This’s one is just shy of 3k, full carbon frame, boom and canopy, the servos where £160 each:oops:

Battery’s are around £120 each and it take 2!
Then there’s the charger, I can charge 6 6s battery’s at one in around 20 min.

Not cheap to get set up but as long as you don’t crash it’s fairly cheap to keep going.

Maybe i will just build a road out to the far end, might end up cheaper.
Or, install some cameras with transmitters, should be do able, they seem to be able to send FPV over a fair distance..

Do pylons affect radio transmissions ? I would need to cross a 400 k line and another smaller line..

Trouble with sitting here dreaming, can soon add up to seriious money.

any of you guys on here know what a secondhand drone is worth to buy? It is a dji phantom 3 professional 3 k with hard case etc looks tidy in pictures
Thanks

I bought a Phantom 4 with 2 spare batteries and a carry case for £700 12 months ago. It had only been flown 7 times. Think I might upgrade it though to a Mavik pro as the downside to the phantom is it’s a bit bulky to carry around unless your an occasional user.

I would think a farmer could justify vat reclaim perfectly well to an inspector - numerous professional uses from stock checking to Bird scaring and field mapping etc

Yes but then Bossfamer couldn't complain about how he gets no perks from running a farming business

One serious comment though would be all the rules for flying a drone without a test are if for private use, non commercial gain etc

If you put one through the books and claimed VAT then surely that would be for commercial gains so you would need to pass the test for commercial drone use on the model you bought?

Where’s the commercial gain ? Your not billing anyone and the infomation you get from it may have no tangible value

I doubt the vat man and CAA are anything like that joined up either

If I bought one I would certainly reclaim the vat

I doubt it’s something that’s ever been tested

I wasn't saying the 2 depts were that joined up :)

But if i am using it to check cattle as an example then it's saving me time and money so that's a commercial gain to me? Same as checking a field looking at crops etc

I think it's a grey area but I have a feeling they will close it anyway as as someone else said they will probably make everyone take a test.

Also for insurance I have mine with the bmfa membership and they clearly state private use only

I think you would be ok

Over private land for your own use it’s hard to argue that you are danger to anyone or making money from it

Thought they looked rather expensive choppers. A chap I worked with for a while was into stunt flying on a big scale and won some worldwide competitions. Lucky sod was sponsored, so basically he got everything for nowt.

I cant zoom my standard, dont think you can zoom any of them but could once the footage was on computer.

As Matt says 20 min is about it for a flight at full speed they do 30 mph but that eats battery so I dont really know how far you'd get in total.

Highest ive been is 121m;)

How do you know what shed to go to?

Do you have a system of numbers and letters for pens.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
