Do Any Farmers Own Auction Companies?

There are many markets that are owned and run by Market Companies which historically were mostly farmer shareholders which continue to work well. Our local market at Ashford is one of the oldest registered companies in England.
Markets these days always need something other than livestock a day or two a week to make any money.

Are there any Auction companies that are still owned by Farmers?
I know there were some but most went bust and suffered from serious bad debts.
Are there any left which are successful?

Bentham is farmer owned but the actual auctioneers are Richard Turner and Son
I think that Penrith is farmer owned too but not 100% on that
I know a few of the small seasonal marts up Scotland are farmer owned and run by either Dingwall or UA.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are quite a few of the smaller local auctions that are farmer owned?

Just asked, Bentham Auction Mart is farmer owned and run. The auctioneers are employed too do the work but it’s the farmer directors who control the job. 👍

That is interesting because there can't be very many where the farmers take the trading risk. I would be interested to learn a bit more about how this is run as I don't think there are many others.

Ah.... I might be wrong on that, sorry I thought you were asking if the actual Auctioneering company (as well as the sites) were farmer owned,
I don't think the risks are run back to the share holders, beyond the risk of the limited company folding and farmers losing their shares

No lots of sites are farmer owned which is probably why they seldom make any money. The auction companies if they have avoided bad debts mostly do quite well but tend to be companies that have estate and land agency as part of the portfolio.

My question is are any auction /trading companies that take the financial risks farmer owned.

Selby - Trades as S.L.A.M. which is a private limited company which is wholly owned by Marshalvane Ltd, the holding company, of which there are 6 directors that are farmers, 2 directors that are butchers, 4 directors that are auctioneers plus one 'other'.

Thanks for that info. Do they also own the market site?
Does Selby still trade a lot of pigs?
Presumably not a lot of sheep and cattle in that area.

Penrith farmers mart is owned and run by the farmer share holders so they do take the risk, but they do not own the premises , they are owned by the original auction company Penrith farmers and Kidd’s

I think so, but wouldn't know for sure. That link to the holding company shows a charge on what looks like it is the premises but I don't know my way well enough round Companies House information to say.

A lot of very good pigs every week.
Sheep varies a bit with season 200-400?? a week.
Cattle, probably 300-350?? a week.

Very reasonable commission charges. Don't charge for washing out.
