Docks in a new ley

Reseeded a field 5 weeks ago and as expected a lot of docks have come through. There is no clover sown in the ley. What is the best spray to kill the docks and approx. cost please?

Polo and hatchet on a new ley will sort it all out. Depending on the rates used and size of weeds it wont be any more than £15/acre, probably more like £10.

Check the maximum dose of hatchet on new leys as I cant remember. If the docks are some size now 0.5L/ha will be too low.

I would advise the use of Headland Polo (or similar) with hatchet or whatever fluroxypyr product you have. If you use fluroxypyr alone do not be surprised if some mythical weed continues to grow in your new ley.

How did you go on with the starane? We sprayed 60 acres in May with starane, it was clean as a whistle when cut in July but some fields have come back riddled and have been doxstarred for second cut others are still clean. Been a weird year for weeds after last year.

It's a weird product and I would not use it alone on mature docks from roots and expect 100% results. Better to use doxstar or pastor and bolster it with additional doxstar. Going too early with the product I found gives unreliable results. Best done after second cut when the weather is warmer.

I was recommended to straight headland polo on one of our new leys by Ollie as above and it sorted the docks and fat hen very well, we didn’t mix fluroxypyr with it though. A few docks coming back now two years later but that’s from seed stock, otherwise the ley is very clean.

I've used Polo and Starane on new leys more times than I could count. It's cheap and effective on weed seedlings and at the right time, before they begin to crowd the grass out.

Basically every ley I ever sold I got sprayed more or less. The timing was often a bit out but 99% of them got done. It's the most effective weed control you will ever do in grass.

Should I graze it for a week or just get in there and spray it? @deleted user 837354

No no, get on and spray them pronto. That is cracking for only 5 weeks. Wanted doing a sniff earlier but never mind. Hit them now, they will disappear down in no time. Then you can graze it, might have to go again or perhaps in spring as might miss some in a population that big.
