Dowdeswell delta 100

Morning all,

mom having problems with a new to me plough . I just can’t get it to pull true is wanders all over the place . The Lemken and Kuhn I have used we’re easy to set up and pull true but I can’t get to the bottom of this one. I’m pulling it with a 6430 premium, tyre pressures the same across the axles, lift rods the same length, check chains loose, plough level in all directions . Any help would be appreciated .

6800 and Dp7 here will pull a wider furrow in boulder clay areas compared to sandy in the same field. It never, (even since new,) has ploughed parallel across the fields even though it has a long rear landslide to help a bit. I always remove the bar and pin stabiliser from the offside and clip up the near side chain so it doesn’t engage. You might find that the waltershield stabiliser isn’t releasing as it can get stuck as you slip into the furrow. The only other thing I can think of is checking the tractor wheel settings.

with lower link sensing as you come into a stiff bit of soil there is more draught so the hydralics ease the plough out a wee bit which means slightly less pressure on the mouldboards leadind to a widder front furrow. the answer is to increase your depth slightly to put more pressure on the boards to narrow the front furrow. that is what worked for me but i wasn't a champion ploughman.

Is the top link pulling straight ?... If not there is a small turn buckle on the side shift linkage , try turning it one way or the other till you get the top link running straight .... Is it auto reset or shear bolt ?

Bought one of these myself last year to run behind my case on 18.4/38 tyres. Must have been running on something bigger before me as it kept trying to take off sideways and take more land. Faffing about with the hyd ram for the furrow width helped a little but it wasn't until I pulled in the turnbuckle on the parallel linkage that I got it running nicely.

Dowdeswell ploughs are good enough machines but they are very fickle to set right. Can deffo sort men from boys.

You obviously have checked the basics.
Make double sure that the depth is same on both sides and that the crowd or tilt over is same too, a little bit here can knock it off completely.
Is the top link pulling straight when coming downhill or on the easiest pulled bit of land? Adjust the true line turnbuckle till it is. Tend to find that the extra pull of going uphill or tough going masks the true alignment of the plough, making it seem like its wider one way when its actually not set right.

Even with the above right, they do have a tendency to wander about in changeable ground conditions, I have a Delta with SCN (Ransome bodies) on it fitted with big reversable tips and when they are new the plough wanders about like hell. New tips and worn landsides = disaster.

I often weld an extra heel on the landsides and it does help, Dowdeswell even recomended taking the gas torch down the side of the new tip to reduce its sideways pull!!
Other than that lot the hyd front furrow width is your new best friend, keeps the job from getting boring trying to keep it straight!! :D:D

I had a couple of dowdeswells in the past,dp7c and a dp7d.both were pigs to set up and had a mind of their own or so it seemed.the second one,the d model was a five furrow ram behind headstock and it was never right despite max Lawrence coming out to sort it.we doubled the land sides which helped but it was never right.my next plough was a Kuhn and it was a million times better and now got a 5 furrow Kuhn which is a brilliant plough.
