Drilling anyone?

To try and be positive but I ve just walked the dog exactly the same route as Monday over stubbles,DTS drilled rape and lightly disced in sewage cake ex osr fields and the difference is night and day. Now I m not saying its dry or drill conditions but with only 30 hrs or so of dry ish weather ( we did have a couple 5 minute showers) there is still a bit of hope that we might be able to go next week. That's after 178 mm of rain since 22 nd September however the next 3 days are forcast wet .

Which lie wetter? The DTS sown osr or the disced stubbles? I can take a wild guess as I have a similar situation with disced oat stubbles and Claydon sown osr...

:scratchhead: Is there any sanity in drilling cereals when your blackgrass is that out of control?
At least the wet weather and lack of drilling is giving some better forced stale seedbeds. Looking at the blackgrass population above, you would hope that once it is sprayed off, you have reduced the potential population in the subsequent wheat, considerably. Obviously there will more seed in the soil which hasn't yet germinated, and/or is brought up the soil profile by the drill/cultivation.

You'd be surprised, I had a field like that the year before last, sprayed out twice and drilled wheat around 20th Oct last year, very little BG come harvest this year. Had lightly disced and it will be SB for next harvest.

On Monday even I was surprised how wet the dts rape ground was and obviously the disced stuff was heavy going and mucky. This morning other than known wet areas , I could probably spray the osr if I wanted and it was critical but it would be messy and bring mud on roads. The disced stuff today, you could walk and not pick up mud on boots but obviously if you walk on your heels, you leave inch deep ruts and it's like plasticine in your hand but I ve only had 30 odd hours of dry weather yet.
Had some good sun yesterday but no wind and a 5 minute shower just after lunch. Today is not so sunny and big clouds drifting around but good breeze so actually today is drying better I think.
As I said above, more rain rest of week it seems.

Got a field of barley drilled today. Driest field on the farm. A bit soft near the pond. A dry day, but started to rain as I finished . I’m more hopeful after seeing what a couple of drying days could do. Lorry driver that collected a load of barley , said he’d seen a lot of ploughs and drills working on his travels today

In the middle.
After the first drying day in a long time i walk our lightest field. I think with 3 or 4 more good drying days i may get the hedges cut without making to much mess. But then again maybe not ass its raining again.
