Drilling anyone?

Ploughed a field yesterday that surprisingly would drill well tomorrow. rotationally though it can’t be wheat so will have to wait for it to warm up for spring beans. Into the next sp bean field and it’s not so pretty. The bottom end will only plough downhill, it’s 45” clay so it’s sketchy at the best of times hopefully weather will do the work on it! Hopefully once off the steepest bit it will pull uphill...

Following 2 loads of straw going towards the Sleaford power station yesterday made me wonder where they are going to source the straw from next year, and at what cost!
A friend of mine works at one, they had a meeting early december about straw shortages. They are upping on miscanthus intake and woodchip/biomass to cover any shortfall

Are they holding suppliers to contracts??
Would think there could be some twitching buttocks if so with plantings the way they are
Does barley burn as well or is it just wheat and rape they like ??

12mm here last nig

Thought all you Shrops boys had lovely sand land, all we get to plough when match ploughing up that way!!! lol
:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: no  In all seriousness I think the clay for at least part of the farm house come from the banky bit that I was struggling to plough this afternoon . Once I got off the steepest bit I tried a couple of pulls upwards but the wheels on the stubble side soon cut themselves in to the same depth as those in the furrow, like pushing a toy tractor through butter :banghead: Certainly not the sort of ground you want to try combination drill spring barley in behind the plough in April. Couple of frosts will do it a wonder though (I hope).

They take wheat straw predominately, but have started taking rape also. They prefer wheat as it burns cleaner, not sure about barley. As for contracts im not sure how it works tbh I’d imagine theres something in the small print

Heavy rain forecast for Monday, so beware. It’s not only getting it in tidy, but what comes after. I’ve had seed rot in the ground despite it going in ok.
It is still only January with plenty of winter still to come and it’s not going to be flying out of the ground, with every crow in the county, waiting for it to emerge.

We haven't had any winter yet, just perpetual autumn!

Why do u not work and drill together?

Because I’m stupid....

...... and a one man band who uses same tractor for Sumo and Drill ?

Forecast has been sh1te Forecast was good to Monday. Worked up on Thursday with plan of leaving it on Friday to air off and then drill Saturday. Bl**dy rain on Thursday night and constant spells of drizzle/mizzle with overcast sky and no wind has put paid to that. Forecast for next week diabolical so I reckon that’s it and I won’t get any wheat in for this harvest. 27 days left to drill ......... but I now have a pudding ?

Seems a bit over the top for anywhere in Devon and Cornwall.

Had quite enough downtime this time with International Rescue.

Not sure that would help, broadcaster may be the answer.

Full on debate here this morning - stubble turnip ground that was grazed with sheep - to drill Diego WW (2nd WW) or wait, put on the digestate and chicken muck and drill spring barley that was destined for that ground? If barley stays within £20/t of wheat, then my money is on the SB as it gives us time to do the job tidy, sort a drain etc - but a lot of pub talk that SB will be £80 whilst WW will be £160 and lets assume we get 90% of the WW acreage successfully and a lower yielding crop? Dilema.
my thinking for what its worth is try not to change your tried and tested rotation/cropping plans . as will bugger up things for years if you go short term

I don’t think that’s the correct attitude to form a company with I would rather limit the company liabilities in the contract would be a wiser decision for the long term

But that is how it is. "Do I take on unlimited liability in a business endeavour based on third party cropping and weather?" is not a proposition to take pride in if it results in loosing to shirt, your wife's shirt, and you kids shirts. Once the potential downside is in excess of the business capital, it's ltd or insurance if you want to sleep at night.
