Would winter barley drilled now do better than spring barley?surely malting SB with a premium would be a better earner now than WB for Feed.
How would the two compare yield wise?I have still got a heap of tipple in the shed so could save WB seed for next year.

If you had access to cheap spring barley seed personally I'd go for that instead. Until last year, the traditional cut off for winter barley was bonfire night as it needs a long vernalisation period. Last year we had a very very long period for just that hence resonable results from late sown winter varieties. Don't farm on last year's results...

I know of several growers on light land that regularly get 9+ t/ha from spring barley sown early.

That's my gut instinct I think I'll wait till the end Of January and put spring barley in.I'm tempted now as conditions are good but the weather has got to get worse and half emerged SB sitting in frozen/wet/snow covered ground can't be good.

I drilled some WB (Cassia) 5th Feb this year at 220kgs /ha and it yielded just over 2.5t / ac, only one fungicide and didn't overdo the Nitrogen. To be fair, it was on kind land, but the seed was there and the price of SB seed was a bit off-putting. I think in a normal year SB will perform better than WB sown Nov - Feb, but if you have the seed you may as well get it in. There is no guarantee that you will drill SB in ideal conditions in the spring.

Spent yesterday broadcasting 100ac and then incorporating with the carrier which was pulling up some horrid wet lumps - on heavy land and the 750a would have done a great job but he wouldn't have it ...................so frustrating but the customer is always right apparently !!!! worst still its WW after spring barley so it will be 50% barley volunteers when (if) it grows
Did you harvest this crop @Clive ?
