Yup. Amazing how land types can vary so much in such a short distance. And the reach of the water. But Blacktoft / Swinefleet land is about a million miles away from mine!

Finished drilling heavy blackgrass land this morning, 300 acres since about 12th Nov in two goes of two/three days. As said, few opportunities, but gone in not bad and plenty of seed.. Shooting at rooks, and a bit of hollowing- but not much. Mid Nov stuff should be peeping through after the weekend. Still 50 acres after beet that will be Jan lifted to put in- but that's fairly normal.

The 450 acres of beans & OSR that was inundated is a waiting game I think. Still have 8 acres of OSR under water, letting off with the 360 through the raised banks. When the swans are waddling rather than swimming(hopefully tomorrow) we will be getting there!

Is it really true that there could be a re-run at the beginning & end of January as well. Supermoons??!!

Looks sticky to say the least Jd. About how ours went in with demo machine, how deep did you have the leading leg?

Bit tacky but beggars can't be choosers! Front legs at 8 inches. Surprised me just how well the dts goes in these conditions. I was in a field ploughed field earlier which had a soft patch so put the front legs into float and used the drill conventionally

Finished our cassia winter barley tonight, just got 80ac wheat left to drill. Some will be easy, some will be difficult after late harvested spuds, might buy a bit of spring wheat seed to finish later on.

8 inch, really? No wonder you need 260 hp. That is for putting in beans I assume?

Static,

What drill are you using and what establishment system?

I tried on heavy land last week and it wouldn't go, and again yesterday with the same result. In the process of getting a good blackgrass chit the soil is too fine and therefore does not allow the wind around it to dry.

Still happy though with the blackgrass control

Land was soloed after beans, then pressed and rolled. Then it poured down for 3 weeks (I mean, waited for a chit). We went through it with the sprayer and then dragged it over. Drilled some with the vaderstad (tynes at the front) but are now on the real clart so the freeflow is on. Headlands will be power harrowed. Some is not pretty. Some is surprisingly good - we have escaped most of the rain but it doesn't dry very fast here. There is a lot of fine tilth but the wheels are running clean. I have drilled worse. The usual debate was had to drill or wait for spring but as seed is in the shed we are getting it in. The saving from 2 x less autumn herbicides, reduced need for fungicide / PGR should counter the inevitable yield reduction. The alternative would be spring linseed.

Herman what is you location I've got 40acres of Sinatra winter barley seed that didn't get drilled because of a hold up spreading muck and the wet weather we've had.I'd decided to drill spring barley instead but I started ploughing it today to get some weather on It And it's turning up really nice.surly it's to late for winter barley and to soon for spring.
What to do.....

Hopefully put the drill away for the final time today. Patched up some Evolution at 400seeds/m2 on some heavy clay after OSR which had been hammered by slugs after being drilled end October. Tine drill created excellent finish after three weeks dry weather. If I had known it was going to stay as dry as this, perhaps wouldn't have forced some ground at the end of October.

Robbie if I were you I would get on with the winter barley, I personally don't think its too late. Someone on this forum drilled some in feb/mar this year and it was ok, put it on nice and thick and It's a job done !
