Drilling progress autumn 2013

Not a criticism at all but would you not be better running through with a low disturbance shatter tine behind the combine at 8 inches, then leave it spray off before seeding with a no till disc drill because looking at that picture then the volume of soil movement is going to mean a full herb program surely?

Spot on except for one thing there would be no need for a 8 inch tine through that field this year. But absolutely a no till disc drill would be ideal and @marco is booked to come and do a bit on friday with his 750A all going well. Other years maybe a bit of a rip may be required but Im trying to give up that addiction. Hi my name is Jonny and its been 2 years since my last deep cultivation! Cheers for your thoughts Warksfarmer.(y)

If your soils are in such good condition then the claydon is surely totally the wrong drill?

No not totally the wrong drill at all, but for the conditions as they are It is a bit of overkill yes. but soils are not always in as good a condition. they were when min tilled in 2011 but last year was last year. we have just had a very dry 6 months and a bit of rain just to moisten recently. Id love a disc direct drill but Im just not quite there yet hopefully once I see the 750 on Friday Ill be a bit closer, one step at a time.

Made a start yesterday, one of our more challenging fields for various reasons, sand, high water table + 8 sets of runway lights for the RAF station over the headge.

Got about 35ac done so far.
Drilled up behind the combine, apart from 70acs that I am waiting for seed.
Seed merchant does not seem too concerned about our little lot.
Its the first year using them for seed, and might well be the last:mad::mad:

Less than half my wheat & barley seed is on farm. Bought via a major buying group from a local firm I have dealt with for years. Most varieties are about a lorry load each too. You are not alone!

I take it all this wheat being sowed is deter dressed? Also in blackgrass free fields!

Yes & yes. Plenty of brome though. It's 19th September, so the ideal window of planting for wheat for maximum yield potential in the absence of serious blackgrass pressure.

Managed to get some land drilled and rolled this morning, just as I was doing the last 2 passes with roller it came on rain. If I'd a been a few minutes later starting, probably would not have got all the rolling done

Starting next week after a bit of grass to cut first then it will be in to spray off before we drill just hope this warm weather ripens the maize off as it would be good to see that off and we can get on with that aswell.

Drilled 70 acres of extremely heavy clay today with solstice. Used 750a direct into chopped oat stubble. Went very well
