Driver snobbery,or inability

a tractor driver comes for interview for a casual harvest position ,reasonable references and experience ,has a look round farm ,and ask what tractor ,would be "his" , you would some times be on the old 2140 , if on woodland jobs ,skidding trees out ready for chipping or logs ,or 14000 hr 6610 ,we use for rolling and averdexing ,and a bit of cart work .and 6215 on corn cart or cultivation ,was the anser.
OH ,was reply ,do i have to drive the old tractors ,,yes was the reply ,you wont be sat in an air con cab every day ,and no smart phones in work time ,work mobile and cb for contact, smart phone at breaks only ,
Obviously not for him ,was the thought ?, of driving the old deeres too much to ask .

I know what your saying and using and getting the most out of the older kit I would think would make the job more interesting, but then again if the guy just wants to drive modern kit then that's his choice I suppose.

Yes. And it’s the interviewers choice not to hire someone who will only work the more glamorous jobs on the farm, instead of just rolling their sleeves up and getting on with whatever is needed for the same £/hour.

@Will 1594 - did you ask him if he’d take a discounted rate for the newer gear? :D

Maybe, should of asked if he needed any training on how to drive a proper tractor with gears and levers ,,oh and what is wrong with wuffling or haybobing a bit of hay with the 135 fergy

I wouldn't spend a day in an old dog any more I'm afraid. I'm too old for that and my back never thanks me for it.

I've said it before and I will say it again, young people love all the new flash kit and it is one reason why having Fendts and the like about might be useful- attracting skilled labour.

If you don't believe me look at the jobs section of this very forum and the dates they are posted.

I'm glad I don't have to employ anyone then.

My fear when I was doing my sandwich and pre-college years was that I'd get stuck on a tractor all day

I can watch old films of tractors, wagons, cars. I can "feel" how they handle, smell, sound.

I've done a lot of flat lorry work on agricultural. You learn to take the rough with the smooth and respect a boss or customer that works with you (because they know a shared job is at least a halved job)

Folks are just getting too precious

That is great but there is no end of threads complaining that people can't find people to work for them.

Maybe eliminating some of the bad aspects of the job is key to this?

Do you honestly expect people who are prepared to sit in a glass box all day to choose to drive an old dogger all day, when there construction and quarry and rail crews are offering more money to sit in a newer machine which will be quieter and more comfortable? What, you think you can pay them less because the view is better?

So you would take 120 k tractor into woods to pull a few logs for a few hours,we even got a new log grab Skidder ,so you dont have to wrestle putting chains round logs ,.? And what is wrong with a 6610 deere with tls ,air con ,air seat ,be worse tractors to spend a day in , would rather have that ,than a new kubota

Attitudes like that is why we have loads of immigrants, the average UK young adult has been told they are entitled to be winners at the furst attempt, no need to graft their way to the top

Maybe ,local beet contractor has two latvian lads been with them 10 years now ,one had never driven a tractor before , but served his time as car mechanic , both lads very talented with spanners , when they have finished beet ,they have a 930 fendt to refurb and recon engine ,then start on balers and beet harvesters , he said they will tackle any thing mechanical ,and only get the dealer out if really really stuck ,

Listen, no offence intended I don't think they give a fudge. There will be no end of harvest jobs on the board at the nearest college or in the farmers weekly or whatever. It isn't like it was back in my day near 20 years ago now.
