Eating Fresh Air - A lesson in marketing

This is worth a read for all farmers, not because of the Dubious claims in it or the fact it’s an interesting technology for the 3rd world where growing conditions are less ideal. But because of the launaguage used to describe farming we all do.

things like:

Eating Carbon Dioxide
Nutrients and vitamins (not chemical fert and trace elements)
All done while never actually telling you what is being produced

It’s a lesson of language for us all. These are phrases all farmers should use to describe our industry. I don’t want to hear another farmer on TV or radio use the words “chemicals” or “pesticides” or even “antibiotics”. we are playing into their language that they use to describe us in a negative way

Use:

vitamins
Crop protection
Life saving medicine
Harvesting Carbon dioxide

please suggest more positive phrases we should all use.

I'm sure it's organic matter redistribution device. ;)

It's just a shame it can't be used to create carbon capture technology to extract Carbon Dioxide from the air. Then some mobile devices could be utilised to convert that material into protein perhaps.

If only we could manage that without an input of lots of electricity and synthetic nutrients, we'd have a more sustainable system than that which creates their white powder.

Being the sort of person who likes to call a spade a spade I’d like to describe the use of such language as talking bollox and I would try to resist it at every chance.

Sadly the use of such language now seems to be the way of the wold and from now on I’m going to have to learn to call a hand held soil aeration device a hand held soil aeration device.

Going to disagree there - we have been taught to use certain launguage internally between ourselves, but that same language is now outward facing. Even by writing on here, you can get the same exposure as someone on the radio or TV. So we all have to learn to use a different launguage.

The word "chemical" was used in 2,627 posts on TFF in the last year.
Pesticide was used in 597 posts.

Maybe we should put some in the swear filter so they just don't appear to the outside world?
