What is the biggest parlour/highest throughput one person can do WITHOUT COMPROMISING ON HYGIENE

Member of my group has a new 40 point rotary, milks himself, 350 cows , high yielding, 2 hours all done!
Another place I visited, 25/50 were peaking at 7 rows/175 cows hour spot rate, mid summer, grass rats, this wouldn’t be overall rate.

200 cows/hour if just strip+cup+spray, any good flowing shed can do this with a decent operator; I could milk them better faster through a 30 swingover than a 54 bail centrifuge, with lower SCC and bacto too

If you have yield variation, faster to run two herds than one

In the UK Pete, autumn calving and inside in winter, all teats will have to be wiped as a bare minimum

Rapid exit =slow to fill, turning 90degrees takes too long

with cow/yield being the main variable you should be looking at litres per hour as a benchmark.

I think with the advent of auto post milking disinfection, I think you need more than 20 points when on summer routine. 30 points would be my personal aim, maximising winter throughput when we have 2 milking.

No need for rapid exit when you have enough points.

Not necessarily the cheapest

You need to look at the whole job-moving cows in/out from field or shed, parlour washing, collection yard scrape etc. Not much put in only spending 90 minutes in the pit if you spend just as much time fetching cows, taking them out again and washing the parlour and yard.


Wellies on to wellies off is the only timing that matters.

I have a 40x40 boumatic expressway. Cows are in 3 groups. 2 milkers. It take about 1 hour combined to get the 3 groups and clean beds. So for 1 hour only one in the parlour. We do a full routine, dip, wipe, strip, attach, dip.
Milking takes 2,5 hours and give 5500 kg ecm. So that's 1100 kg ecm for every working hour.
If we only dip once, it's 15-20% faster. Labour limited setup. If someone else fetch cows, it's under 2 hours.

I've never milked in a rapid exit, but in 2 different parlours where cows had to turn 90 Deg, turning and putting head in right place took too much time

not all that expensive imo. I think people us included get hung up on the idea that you must have a 60 point.

The rotarys are cheap, the building work involved absolutely kills it
