I'm just wondering if anyone knows any grain merchants etc. selling einkorn, emmer, kamut or any of the older unconventional wheat varieties. I've heard that there might be some in Denmark and Germany?
There is work going looking at newer material in the spelt market and a tiny amount produced in this country, though I am not aware of work or production on Einkorn and certainly none in the certification system which gives you some guarantees on purity etc. And no commercial production of Emmer or Kamut. The only really old wheat variety about is Maris Widgeon where there is a small amount of commercial production primarily for straw production.
No, we're growing Spelt, which is old in theory, but has been crossed with modern wheat apparently. Funnily enough I was talking to someone yesterday that makes a dehulling machine and he was saying that they've sold a few recently to spelt growers who want to add a bit of value to their crop, so there must be more being grown than we suspect. We've got a nice big heap from our winter spelt field, but as the bushel weight is around 38kg/hl, a big heap doesn't necessarily mean big tonnage.
@Great In Grass , einkorn would be fantastic. Kind of whatever amount would be available.
We have spelt growing, and are checking viability of small samples of other varieties from the gene banks. I know there are old varieties floating about, and there is legislation around selling seed. I though I'd ask if there is any being grow just to see its effect on the land, the processing involved and interest.
I saw some older and alternative varieties in America and Canada. It was amazing. The seed, growing, community and flavour. Something I had never before experienced.
