Electric fence energisers

Hi All

Looking at options for a battery powered, 12v fence energiser for sheep. I've already got 3 x reels of Gallagher polywire (500m each). I want to run 3 or 4 strands across a given field and occasionally do some corners, so maximum length of a boundary might be 300m. Can anyone recommend any makes / brands. I've just come across the VOSS brand which seem keenly priced! The joules output seems to be higher than the Gallagher kit. Anyone got any thoughts on these? I want to go 12V because it stays compatible with my charging units.

I was proposing to use normal 12v leisure batteries to power. Not interested in solar as not enough sun.... :(

Also, any tips on spacings of posts for sheep or any other kit needed. A first fence experience for them and, judging by how they get caught up in brambles, I'd like to avoid toasting them.

Thanks all. Look forward to hearing from you.

Where are you to competly dismiss solar?
My solar powered pel 705’s are by far the most reliable fencers I have, far better than anything with a battery that I have.

Thanks. I'm looking at Mole Online. I can a 250 and a 300 model but not the 3500...

Having bought a couple of those fencers from MVF, as well as having a couple of Defender 20’s from RAPPA, and a couple of VOSS fencers, I suspect that they are all made by VOSS (or whoever supply them? ). The electrical connectors, knobs and cases are all far too similar for it to be a coincidence imo. ;)

VOSS were seemingly having problems supplying the UK post Brexit, according to another thread on here, but the RAPPA Defenders are certainly good units, as are the MVF 3500 units.👍

I find them 100% reliable, on the odd occasion that stock get over its a problem with the wire not the fencer.
Can’t say the same for any of my battery powered fencers, I can only speak as I find.

Are you keeping woolly coated critters in though, or dairy cattle?

I won’t entertain anything below 2J output to reliably keep sheep in, but would be happy to use lower output for cattle, pigs or horses.

its a good tool and they sure dont like it up 'em :sneaky: takesa fair battery to run him mind or the little charger adaptor indoors with long leads to it, and no im not explaining that again either.

Iv got the next one up from that, a big battery off my hilux lasts about 3 days on it on full output, 7 days on half output… but it kept welshies in no problem so worth the frequent battery changes… my truck has twin batterys and auxiliary charging so I just swap battery’s off my truck for that energizer

ours is mainly :sneaky: on a 120aph battery with a 100w panel.. which even this time of year keeps him going on setting 1 as long as there's not too much shorting going on can be ,bit different on the likes of redstart stumps mind you

If the sheep are not trained to electric fence, train them inside their current pen. Run your polywire inside the fence about six inches so they can touch it, but not get on the other side of it. With a short clean run, it will be easy to keep hot. They'll learn you don't even think of going near that wire, they will have nightmares of that wire. If you put them out in field with two or three strands of polywire and they don't know what it is, they'll walk right through it, maybe get shocked, maybe not. If they get shocked, they'll know to run faster next time.

Solar works fine with little sun, a fence uses so little power compared to what a panel can produce.

I have one of those as a ‘training’ fencer. As you say, they don’t like it up ‘em.👍
Switch it to half power once lambs are trained to it.
