I would be embarrassed by less than 10 ton. If I was him I would be keeping my mouth shut about such terrible yields as he clearly doesn't know what he's doing and if his neighbours get wind of it he will probably lose all his contract acres and will no longer be able to afford the repayments on that new Lexion and fleet of Fendts. In fact it would probably be best if he put it about that his crop failure was in fact a trial area put in with a direct drill but not to worry as when the soil structure has repaired itself with the aid of an expensive tillage radish and black oat cover crop, his yields will set new records.

But why? Your only fooling yourself. Thinking you can get 4 ton acre just makes me wonder what grip of the other costs they have.

That's about where we normally are. Somehow in 2015 we averaged about 8.8 but I think that was more down to weather than us. Certainly didn't manage to repeat it last year.
Yes, 2015 was a very good year for Spring Barley around here and we achieved similar record yields. But in a normal year 2.5- 3 tonne an acre is as embarrassing as it gets!

Harvest 2016 ADAS view
  • Wheat – National yield estimate of 7.9-8.1 t/ha – around the five year average (7.9 t/ha). Overall, wheat quality is good this season, with the average protein level for GB wheat harvested this season at the highest level for ten years, averaging 12.6%. The AHDB quality survey average specific weight for all wheat crops is 77.2 kg/hl, which is just lower than the three year average (77.6 kg/hl). Hagberg Falling Number (HFN’s) averaged 319 seconds, which is higher than last year (312 seconds at this stage last year) and higher than the three year average (303 seconds). HFN ranged between 219s-413 seconds.
  • Spring wheat - National yield estimate of 6.6-6.8 t/ha, with yields ranging between 3.0-10.0 t/ha. Overall, spring wheat quality was good, with specific weights averaging 75 kg/hl, HFN averaging 292 seconds and protein averaging 13.2%.
  • Winter barley – National yield estimate of 5.9-6.1 t/ha –10-13% decrease on the five year average yield (6.8 t/ha). Quality is acceptable with specific weights averaging 63.1 kg/hl, nitrogen content averaging 1.59% and screening levels through a 2.25mm sieve averaging 5.5%.
  • Spring barley – National yield estimate of 5.6-5.8 t/ha-0-4% increase on the five year average (5.6 t/ha). Quality was good, with specific weights averaging 64.4 kg/hl, nitrogen content averaging 1.61% and screening levels through a 2.25mm sieve averaging 2.9%.
  • Oats – National yield estimate of 5.4-5.6 t/ha-2-5% decrease on the five year average (5.7 t/ha). Overall, quality of oats was good with samples being bright in colour. Specific weights were good with winter oats tending to have higher specific weights than spring oats. The specific weight for all oats averaging 54 kg/hl and ranging between 42-58 kg/hl.
  • Winter oilseed rape – National yield estimate of 3.0-3.2 t/ha –11-17% decrease on the five year average (3.6 t/ha). Quality has generally been good, although there are some reports of variable seed sizes. Oil content averaged 43% over the season and ranged between 39-46%.
  • Spring oilseed rape – National yield estimate of 1.9-2.1 t/ha. Yields ranged from 1.25-2.5 t/ha.

winter barley seems low.

It was a terrible year for winter barley. Volume came into the shed at 48 kg/hl. I'm recleaning it before it goes out just to get it to 56 - 59kg/hl so my claims are only £10/t! :inpain: This was a common theme across the South and Midlands.

I budget for 6.5 t/ha as that's my 6 year average for total spring malting barley SOLD. Usually Propino. Sure, the yield meter shows over 10 t/ha at times but that's what the farm average is. There are better growers than me locally and the newer varieties like Planet and Irina have potential to do better than this.
