Well thank God for that.

Blades are fine. Movement on hub (less than a year old) which when it eventually arrived 4 months later was then not fitted as they weren't happy with some foundation cracks, (thank you, Mosscliff). Had to have engineering survey, rods tested etc - nothing major just needed sealing again. When concrete had been sealed and the grout cut out and replaced, the hub was by then under the lock and key of the administrators for months as Endurance had gone bump. Then after a quiet winter it got windy!!!! Need very light winds to down the blades. Of course not covered by warranty now either. A few other hiccups on the way but I won't bore you... 10 months almost to the day.

Cheers. Glad you're spinning again. This 'winter' is proving to have a bit of late-season puff.

What was the story? Blade repair or new set? My flat roots are for the scrapheap (spring tension rod again) when I can get some circular ones.

We had a tension rod on a flat root go and it was running OK (on eric and I also have a wireless link to the plc to check on) first thing then I just happened to be passing and it sounded odd. The rod had popped so that blade was pitched up and it was pulling 80kw! If I had been away on holiday it could have been a big 'leccy bill!

The broke rod was a cut thread and not rolled as should be used and just looked like it came from screwfix!

Yeah, this is my 2nd tension rod failure; both times picked up by me (luckily swiftly) by the negative generation. Not a lot of racket, just unusual wind noise due to pitch being to cock. I have immersion central heating and knew something was suspect when the oil boiler was running on a breezy evening.

I'm assured that the circular root blades have a better arrangement; might loose a bit of top end generation but if that reduces machine stress, price worth paying. Some say that output is better at low winds.

I could hear it repeatedly trying to motor to synchronize online, did it a dozen or more times before I clicked!

We have the circular root blades now, well have for about 2 years. They have more twist on the aerofoil so do stall better and reduce the down by about 10kw. You have to remember that this is a 58kw gen' (@50hz) so itss not so over loaded. Also we found that with the new blades the nose cone has a bigger space around the blade base on the downwind low pressure side and so more air gets thru' to improve cooling.
A few months age we got the oil filter unit fitted and went to 300g oil and that does start slower in the cold low speed winds.

Have you (or anyone) had the expander pin upgrade (pin holding blade on removed, hole drilled out, bush fitted, new pin,£5000) Earthmill were sending out emails a month or 2 ago....still thinking about it, any advice welcome.

I have been told they are still being worked on but should cut down the number of dead track rod ends and bang noises. Must be quite a job drilling the hole out, get that wrong and the blade is scrap! At least if it is bushed then replacements could be slipped in later as needed and that should be lower cost.
Quite a price £5k and at the rate we are getting problems I wonder if we will get any profit this year, or again.

We've started fitting this system, it is largely unproven though. There will be maintenance on them.

They are fitted by drilling the hub. So it is not the blade at risk but the hub. Swapping in a new hub isn't easy or cheap - 9 times out of 10 they have to be cut off!

EWT the world's leading decentralized wind turbine and service company, announces the launch of a comprehensive service offering to meet the demands of the many owners of endurance wind turbines currently suffering from service challenges and revenue loss from sub optimal operation and service reaction time

The new service will offer an upgrade to control system integration, access to EWT's unrivaled localized and comprehensive U.K. Service team infrastructure, and 24/7 remote monitoring. The control system upgrade, which will continue to be developed and comes with a 10 year warranty*, will enable 24/7 active monitoring to improve availability, will proactively assist in the speedy resolution of the most common turbine errors and will facilitate an early warning signal to our nationwide service team to enable a shorter mean time to recovery. By taking advantage of the new service, owners of Endurance wind turbines will benefit from a lower risk profile towards the wind turbine’s remaining end-of-life-time. This new service is an extension of EWT’s already successful UK management and service portfolio, delivering excellent results for EWT turbine owners in the UK.

"Maintenance models rely on strong governance and automation. This allows risks to be identified early and issues that form a threat to the continuity of the customers’ business to be resolved quickly" said Han Roelofs, Manager Operations at EWT. "With our solutions, owners of Endurance wind turbines can take their existing turbines to a higher level; moving away from run to failure towards condition based maintenance. Together, EWT’s 24/7 remote control centre and renowned field service network in the UK ensure a total understanding of the wind turbines mission critical systems which enables the effective management of the maintenance and service lifecycle” added Mark Jones, CEO of EWT.

What are your solutions to cracks in the bed plate, blade knocking, main shaft failures, over speeds?

All common problems on the 3120. Getting more difficult to insure these turbines.

EWT would be better looking after their own turbines instead of trying to put the existing service companies out of business.

The big three underwriters RSA (NFU), Allianz, and Aviva had all stopped taking on new business a few weeks ago - this might change later in the year.

I had heard that some had also stopped offering renewals to existing customers.

Give CNC asset finance a call, they have started offering insurance as well as their 3 years warranty. As ever read the small print and make sure you understand what you are getting for your premium.
