Grass to milk

Ah, great stuff. Cows still out for us, will be in soon though as nights getting cold. Starting to look at bedding options for winter, I was looking at the new premium envirbed but the sample I saw was gritty and the sawdust in it had lots of course sharp bits. Think we will probably stick to sawdust, tried and tested

I think there are two different types when it comes to the sawdust it's mixed with , mine is the kiln dried sawdust mix , it's very soft , sawdust I find on it's own doesn't keep the cows as clean even when bedded up twice a day as even if the wind doesn't blow it away one bit of urine and it washes away where as the envirobed is far more absorbant and just soaks it up , so I get cleaner cows from bedding up every 4 to 5 days and just scrapping the muck off twice a day , a huge labour saving for a one man band like me hence I am always so reluctant to return to sawdust

Hi Yorkshire farmer1, we’re now producing Envirobed in the North East using new drying techniques resulting in softer, non-gritty product. This is being offered at special winter prices so it should work out cheaper than our previous quotes and since it’s closer to your farm (depending on where you’re based in Yorkshire) this will also save on haulage. We’d love the chance to provide you with a delivered quote and sample of our new bedding if you’re interested. Thanks, Sally.

Sounds like it does the job for you well, if it saves time and labour then thats invaluable. We usually always end up sticking with sawdust in the end, the cows seem to be fine on it. We still have some left from when we turned the cows out earlier in the year so should be ok until November for any bedding. I got an attractive quote for cozi bed today which has made us think about giving some other beddings a trial this winter, Ive never tried envirobed as always found it too expensive to sawdust in comparison. Think I may mix paper and my own sawdust for a trial, we have some spare shed space to mix probably 20 ton or more.

Its not just the cost of the product.
Sawdust uses up N to break down.
What ph are other bedding products? Sand has a neutralising value for instance.
And also do you need to change infrastructure?
Neighbour was telling how "cheap" his new bedding product was. But he spent thousands changing the system to save pence per cow on product and i was still cheaper than his using straw.

Hi Yorkshire farmer1, it’s great to hear you’re gaining the benefits of paper-based bedding, as we believe it’s the most suitable material for dairy cattle. The main difference is that EnviroBed is now produced using low temperature heat from renewables. This is a gentle drying process that retains more of the heat-sensitive short fibres from the wet paper crumb raw material. We’re seeing that this results in a less dusty product, with improved higher absorbency and greater cow comfort. If you'd like to find out what farmers say about Envirobed you can visit our website here: http://ow.ly/YZwy306g5HC. Thanks, Sally

hisally yeah getting on really well with cosy bed I wanted try paper couple year ago but was too expensive like £85pt not like price now and dad was too stuck on sawdust but no price has come down a lot with cosybed got good deal and hes fairly hapy. what do you mean by a gentle drying proses? we don't find bedding dusty really sawdust can be dusty best of times like but with samples we got of both papers this was less dusty and cheap so went with that and job has been good so cant complain with bedding or service from the guy phil been spot on next day delivery when need in emergency last week.

What are peoples opinions on cozy bed. I had a load, felt like it had grit in it with dry lumps of paper, bits of glass, wasn't the claimed 95% dry matter either, and seemed to chew through it very fast, as it wasn't staying on the mattresses

Good Morning, having seen your comments here this morning I have to say I'm rather surprised by this. I am aware one of our directors is on route to see you this morning in regards to the issues you have addressed. We are rather shocked in regards to the glass as none of the transport companies we use carry glass and all lorries are thoroughly inspected when bringing raw material to site and also when taking finished product to farm.

also we test all of our bedding every day to ensure It is at least 95% DM. Again this has surprised me as we have sold over 1800 Tonnes already this November and haven't had any complains RE not dry enough. We spend a lot of money drying at high temperatures to ensure that we get the correct DM of our bedding.

Hopefully when my director sees you this morning the problem can be resolved as this is a strange one and not something we have come across before. Best wishes, Chris
