Equipment paint

Hi all

Just bought a tipper trailer and want to give it a lick of paint. I'm doing a quick job grinding / scraping off the loose rust but I want a paint (one coat or primer + topcoat) that I can apply direct to rust, paint over existing paint, comes in colours (green) and has good, long lasting protection.

Any recommendations on brands or approach?

Thanks

If you don’t take all of the rust off, at least give it a brush over with Milkstone remover and leave for a day - it will convert the rust to iron phosphate which will protect the metal a little.

We wanted what I called 'oil tank green' and had it explained to me that the trade call it skip paint, just search 'skip paint' there's a few brands out there, we found some 20l tins for £40 was a while ago though.

If the paint is cheap it’s cheap for a reason.
Low anti corrosion properties and low grade pigments that will fade.
Low levels of preparation will accelerate the coating’s failure.
It is what it is.

CROMADEX offer very good paint systems plus single coat primer top coat products too.
Delivery is free too.

I used Red Oxide paint then gloss top coat on my muck spreader 6 years ago and it’s still good today. From the Witham Group.
As said, generally the best you can do is get the loose stuff off as the rust erodes deep into the metal. I find that warming the machine up with a space heater to drive out moisture before painting makes a much more long lasting coating and it paints more easily. Switch the heater off before you start painting if it’s flammable paint.

I blasted some beams years ago and was initially painting with red and grey oxide primer paint with an airless sprayer. This required to have paint thinned to get the thing to work and it was very frustrating.

Because of this bought an airless paint pump and work rate quadrupled and didn't have to thin paint to get it to spray.
The beams painted with the airless sprayer have hardly rusted whilst the beams done with the airless sprayer will need blasting again realistically.

Few things I learned were not to use grey oxide paint on freshly blasted steel as not enough difference in colour - fine for second coat if first coat red.
Rusty steel with any pitting on it has a greater surface area than clean steel when working out how much paint you need.
Its a lot of work getting steel prepped for painting, skimping at the paint application part whether that is method of applying or amount of coats applied if not done right will require a lot of time, money and effort to rectify. I thought that a £50 pound airless sprayer was the economical choice, in hindsight the £350 for an airless sprayer was cheap given the uniform thickness of paint it applied.

As for painting over rusty steel it depends how rusty, big flakes will hold moisture and due to this will swell as the iron in the steel oxidises eventually causing breakage of paint film allowing moisture in which will allow corrosion cycle to continue. Light surface rust prob get away with but would always advise to remove all corrosion if its only small areas then spot treat it as saves having to redo in a year or twos time. The mini soda blasters that EBay used to sell for £50 were excellent for these small areas.

we painted a marshal trailer about ten years ago with Spaldings paint but used their anti rust product first after a good cleaning and it is still looking all right now.
