Belarus, Russia and Kazakhstan not invited. While the Vatican State declined the invitation .
47 participating states plus the EU.
Why would not any who is invited go ? Lots of free posh hotel nights and expensive meals all paid for by someone else, plus the possibility of some "fun" away from home, where do I sign up. Absolutely no reason why it can't happen on zoom etc, just like Davos and the cop jamborees each year all these "vital" conferences are just an excuse for a freebie

Maybe the idea of 'fun away from home' didn't appeal to the Pope?🤷

bliar and major more the culprits
Not really, Thatcher was very much the main driving force behind a unified single market, as she thought the UK was always at a disadvantage compared to other European countries who generally put more support into various industries than the UK government wanted to. And that a single market would allow a more level playing field, which it subsequently did.

I think you missed the point. Thatcher was indeed in favour of the common market but not the EU as laid down by Maastricht. This is where Major and finally Blair contrived to drive a nail in the coffin because they wanted constitutional changes without a referendum. Thus the rise of Euroscepticism and the influence of Nigel Farage in bringing about the referendum.

Interesting take on the facts you have there...

No, no petal. Maggie, was not only in favour of, but also a prime mover on the single market and customs union.
I expect if she were to come back today, and saw Britain had been taken out of both, I’m pretty sure there would be indiscriminate use of the handbag by her, on the Brexit benches.

Single market is very different from what it is today. There is no way Thatcher would have agreed to any kind of European government.
Because its a confederation of sovereign nations and the UK sometimes had to agree to proposals that the majority other counties wanted, even if we didn't. But even then we frequently negotiated various beneficial optouts.

Thats fine and we all have to agree to things sometimes that we don't want but as we all know with the EU certain countries have more "influence" than others, it's a mute point now as the British voted out so it's not our business what the EU does.
